Tropical Fruit Discussion / Musang King frozen durian
« on: August 05, 2013, 12:38:58 AM »
Hi Folks,
A local-ish Chinese supermarket has started getting in frozen Musang King durian ($6kg whole - $13kg flesh). They usually have Monthong and Gaan Yeow, but have just recently been stocking King. Does anyone know if its good as a frozen fruit?

Hi folks,
I'm interested in getting a few seeds of the new Floridian mangoes, particularly the poly ones, but also a few of the others. Lemon Zest, Orange Sherbert, coco cream, etc. I'm also after Po Pyu Kalay Lemon Meringue.
Thanks,
Bruce.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anona ID please
« on: April 24, 2013, 06:41:08 PM »
Found these while walking around Darwin yesterday. Darwin has thousands of native annona growing on the streets and footpaths - cananga, milusia, meiogyne, pseudovaria - along with as many stink foot trees - native noni with huge and stinky fruit.

Anyone know what these ones are? Black when ripe. Taste quite nice. One seed per fruit. Typical thin petalled annona flower like cananga, but the single seed has me a bit confused...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Alison Red Kensington Pride mango
« on: February 02, 2013, 09:52:26 PM »
I had my first in season ARKP last night and I must say, it was delicious. its a lot like KP, but a shade better imho, with the cheeks being fleshy, strongly mango flavoured and sweet without fibre while there is a little fibre about the seed and a more tart flavour right on the seed. its a nice looking fruit too, with a very red blush that starts off as purple, so quite different from standard KP in that respect. Its also a dwarf tree, with the mother being under 15ft at 50-odd yo and was selected in the wet hinterland of the sunshine coast, so is happier with the wet than standard KP. Pics below.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Soggy yard update jan 2013
« on: January 28, 2013, 04:29:36 AM »
Thought i'd throw up a few pics of my trees. much of the eastern coast of OZ has been hit with an ex-TC and we've had 1000ml in the past week and wind over 100kph, but its still all looks okay. You'll notice a lean to the south west on many of the trees though  :P
Captions to come soon.

Rollinia on the ground. Long tap root but few surface roots means this one lays down like this when wind gets around 100kph but comes back up with the help of a star picket support.

Soursop leaning

in flower now

Grapes - if anyone knows what type these might be  I 'd love to hear!

More grapes - these are amazing. picked up locally a few years back. Tastes like grape soda, seedy, flesh like a jaboticaba, skin excellent to eat.

Allison's Red KP. Very dwarf tree with red/purple kp type fruit.

Dragonfruit support just getting going

King thai mango

poor Kwan. the mango that wont let me take off any fruit - it keeps re-setting.

Bananas held on. Dwarf ducasse in front handles competition with crepe myrtle better than blue java at rear.

Jujube with funky fungus taking over. Anyone know what this is and if i should get rid of it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grapefruit warnings
« on: November 27, 2012, 04:20:53 AM »
Some may be aware that grapefruit are terrible tasting, but they can also do some pretty nasty things to folks on a certain number of medications. Recently, studies have doubled the amount of prescription medications that are impacted by grapefruit, which can lead to increasing the potency of the medication and inadvertent overdose or rendering the drug ineffective. I guess its another reason to graft over that old grapefruit to a nice flicks yellow pommello or lemonade fruit ;)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / The other miracle fruit - Katemfe
« on: October 16, 2012, 03:19:22 AM »
Is anyone growing this plant? Thaumatococcus daniellii.
I know its from Africa, 1000 times sweeter than sugar and a weed in far north queensland, but does anyone have any growing tips? Treat it like a ginger?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Chacopat lychee
« on: September 16, 2012, 11:16:06 PM »
Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone here has the 'Chacopat' lychee from Thailand? Its a large fruited cultivar and is spoken about here in hushed tones. Its supposedly dwarf and among the best, gaining a higher price than others in Thailand. Anyone know of this one?
Bruce.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Paxton's Prolific atemoya
« on: September 01, 2012, 06:21:02 AM »
here are a few images of my young Paxton's Prolific atemoya. Its had 4 fruits in its first year. it will set something like 50% of flowers when mature. Fruit size is good and taste is superb.
Heritage is from the Mammoth line - I believe it was a budsport of Hilary White which was a sport of Pinks Mammoth.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Australian Native Fruits
« on: July 19, 2012, 08:42:19 PM »
Thought it was time to start a post on fruits native to Australia, particularly the north east. I know Mike and I have posted a few things in other topics, but I'll make something consolidated and searchable.
Australia has thousands of fruit and nut species. The vast majority are unknown in terms of fruit quality and are left as bird food. Only very recently have Australians started to make selections and improve the quality of native fruits (the Hawaiians beat us to it a long time ago and people dont want this to happen again!  ;)) .
Here are a few quick resources:
There are a few books around, mostly titled 'bushfood something or other', but the new standard is this mega book: http://nokomis.com.au/fruits.html - it doesnt give descriptions of taste, but has excellent illustartions (no photos) and info on leaves, growth, range.
There are excellent flckr streams for photos and a bit of info on some of the fruits:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackdiamondimages/sets/72157603847871217/
http://www.flickr.com/groups/australianrainforestplants/
Here are a few nurseries that have harder to find cultivated species:
http://www.yuruga.com.au/stock-lists/bush-tucker-plants/
http://www.burringbarbotanicgardens.com/

Anywho, thats a start. I bet Mike has much better and more info. Im certain he'd have some killer photos too.
Will update as I remeber more.

Tropical Fruit Online Library / Rare Fruit Australia archives

I thought some might be interested in looking at the archives of Rare Fruit Australia, dating from 1980 to the recent past. They have been digitised and made free to all interweb fruitists:

There is heaps of info in here!  ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Interesting inflos
« on: April 11, 2012, 10:33:39 PM »

The thread on MMD sparked me into thinking about strange blooms that occurred on my Alison Red Kensington Pride (dwarf) mangoes this Autumn. Hopefully the pics work, but the new growth was split down the middle, exactly one half being new leaf growth and the other being inflorescence. I've never noticed this on any other mango, but have to confess I've not really taken a lot of notice of the flowers high up on the big guys - its just that its a baby dwarf that it caught my eyes. Has anyone else noticed this or have any images of interesting or irregular blooms?
