Tropical Fruit Discussion / Woohoo, my 1st Miracle Fruit tree.
« on: May 15, 2014, 08:55:37 PM »
After reading/hearing so much about it, I just gotta have one. Wish me luck.  :D
It's listed as a 1-gallon, but the size of the pot is nowhere the size of a typical 1-gallon jug  of milk.  Healthy looking despite having been  in the box for 4 days. Very well wrapped. Height is 31" from the top of the pot to the top leaf.

I don't know what % of sunlight is blocked by a typical window screen. I have a few spare ones from a friend's house.
Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What cultivar is this cherimoya?
« on: May 03, 2014, 01:09:55 PM »
The leaves appear to be thicker than what I'm familiar with. Any guesses?

Got this Suebelle at Home Depot about 3 years ago, every year I'd see it grow taller, more leaves, more branches,... but no flower or fruit. Well, all the waiting and cussing finally paid off. :) Are these flowers or small fruits? How long will it take for these little guys to mature to full size? On another branch, there's a single fruit, about the size of a large black pepper.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What's on my Syzygium's leaves?
« on: April 26, 2014, 05:53:33 PM »
I pruned it back heavily after lots of die-back from the Acrtic Freeze last winter. Now it's leafing out nicely. Except that many of the leaves are infested with these little black bugs (and their eggs), ants seem to hang around those spots.  What are they, and what can I do to get rid of them?
Thanks,

My Haas has been in the ground for over a year. The last few weeks have seen some new growth flush, even flowers. But overall, there are still a bunch of sick-looking leaves, and the whole tree just doesn't look as green as expected. I water it with drip irrigation about 3 times a week, for 8 minutes each time. Can it also be nutrient deficient? I sprinkled some Citrus & Avocado fertilizers around the canopy a month ago, and flooded the soil around it (there are bananas next to the avocado as well). What can you tell from the photo?
Thanks,

My Haas is showing lots of new leaves, and what appears to be flower buds (first time!!!). However, there are still a lot of old, not so healthy looking leaves that have been on the tree since last summer. Despite the very cold weather (mid 20s) during the "Arctic Freeze" a few months ago, none of the leaves dropped. Should I remove the old leaves to promote new growth, or just leave them alone? This is the first time that I haven't killed an avo (lost 2 previously),  so I'm pretty excited.  ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Why is my Sapodilla so sick looking?
« on: April 05, 2014, 04:52:05 PM »
Been in the ground for at least 2 years. Not much growth at all. Leaves have always had the brown edges as seen in the photo. Water in the summer is twice a week. No water lately due to the cold and rainy weather. Everything else in the yard is sprouting new growth except this guy.
Thanks,

Got a smallish fruit from an Asian market, I believe it came from Mexico. It's the sweetest jackfruit I've EVER tasted. Very dry and practically no latex. The only distinguishing features are the brownish markings on the pieces themselves. I've never seen any jackfruit with these marks. Thanks,

I have a space that's about 10' x 10' at the southwest corner of the house. Because of its location, the east side of the space is blocked by my house, same for the north side. The ground is covered with colored concrete, save for a 4' diameter circular portion where a stone fountain currently sits on dirt. I have a bunch of plumerias growing in-ground around the fountain. In the winter months, the south and west stucco walls get pretty warm during the daytime and stay warm longer after nightfall, so the trees in this space are not affected by the cold temps so much.

I'm contemplating putting up a semi-permanent GH that's at least 10' high. I THINK I can convince my wife to remove/relocate the fountain from the center spot, thus freeing up more planting area.  :) I'd put up 4 large posts that can be moved out of the way when I disassemble the GH in the spring. Can I buy the support frames and panels and assemble the GH myself, to the size that I need? I could build the support frames myself with 2x4, 2x2 woods, but non-wood materials are probably much better. Not sure if I should go with PVC (are they strong enough) or something metallic? What type of panels should I consider, glass or polycarbonates? I'd definitely want a motorized window of some kind to open during the day if the indoor temps reach a certain point. It's a must that the GH be not too difficult to assemble and disassemble (it's not staying up year round). I'm sure I'm missing a bunch of important considerations, so whatever you guys see, please point them out. Thank you!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What's going on with cherimoya.com

When I'm lazy and don't want to drive to Westminster to get my fruits, I'd order a couple boxes from them. The fruits always came perfect. I just checked their website, they have the fruits listed, but no "Buy" option.  ???

It seems to be very sensitive to cold. Lows have been in the 50s at night, and already the lower branches/leaves are turning yellow and falling off. At this rate, I'll be left with nothing but the main trunk before thanksgiving arrives. How do you care for these plants?
Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / When is sugarcane ripe/sweetest?
« on: October 01, 2013, 10:38:28 PM »
These look kinda ready to my novice eyes. I'd hate to cut it down only to find that it's not ready (not sweet). The purple part is about 4'. Thanks

I'd guess that at least a third of the fruits on my tree are bland tasting and spongy. The rest are kind of sweet to sweet and crunchy. Is this caused by over-watering, or under?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cancun fruit find.
« on: August 12, 2013, 02:08:29 PM »
I've been overstuffing myself with

The green kind is what I really like, very sweet, some graininess. The black kind is not worth it at all.  Very dry and doughy, has a starchy feel to it. There was also very good rambutan and ataulfo mangoes, forgettable kenep, and fairly decent dragon fruit. Interestingly, the annonas are called saramullo, not cherimoya or cherimola like it was explained in a thread here not to long ago.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What kind of plum is this?
« on: August 05, 2013, 01:17:10 AM »
Got a bag at a Vietnamese market, very sweet. I'd like to plant one, or 2, in the yard. I've never seen this plant at any big box stores, or the few private nurseries that I visited.
Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Seedling: does this look like Black Sapote?

Got some seeds to germinate, one of them is supposedly a black sapote. Is this it?

I recall last year, some SoCal member posted that the Fountain Valley Costco had a bunch of tropicals (mangoes, persimmons, jujubi,....) at certain times of the year. Is that an annual thing that they do? I know not all Costcos will do this, I'm looking for mango trees in particular, but am open to other stuff as well.
Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What's causing fruits to split?
« on: July 26, 2013, 06:33:44 PM »
I've always had longans and mangos split on me.  :( :( Is it more likely to be over or under-watering? Last year I hardly watered, they split. This summer, watering more, still split, though it's probably less. Too early to tell. Thanks,
