This is to keep the graft union super snug?  That the advantage?

Whoa, nice!  Is it as simple as it seems?  Just wind a rubber band tight then zip tie it?

Yeap , when you wrap the Rubber band hold the tension down with your finger, with the other hand loop the TW around the RB keep the tension locked in 👍don’t over tighten.

The Rubber band also helps to protect the scion from the plastic TW.
I call it the RBTW method 😉

This looks pretty interesting.  Is the graft itself a cleft?  It seems like the tie wrap would present some problems if left on too long, how long do you typically leave it on?

Thanks,
John

It’s a cleft , the Tie Wire comes off in 3 weeks .

Thanks, Ed.  I'll have to give it a try.  I sometimes feel like I need 3 hands when trying to secure a rubber band on a graft, this method should make it easier & secure the graft in place much better.

Good luck, I like experimenting with various methods and stick to the one that works best for me , so far the RBTW method is working well for me, and I’m a newbie in the grafting world 😉

Ed has a good system . For those who do not want to use the ties. After i wrap the scion with the Rubber band , i wrap the rubber band with Buddy Tape ( thicker material than parafilm)which protects the rubber band from drying out/ becoming frayed and loose and this protects it enough while the graft takes or not.

Flagging tape from home Depot also works great to tighten up graft unions over the grafting tape.  It's more stretchy than tree tape but less stretchy than grafting tape.

Maybe wrapping the graft with thick copper wire like a bonsai tree would work better than tie wraps?

Great job Ed. May I ask where are you getting your scions from? I emailed tropicalacres for availability last week but haven’t heard anything back yet.

You have to email them what you want and they will reply back with the availability of those varieties. With all the varieties they have, it will be a lot of work replying back to each customers request of available scions on any given day as they have so many different varieties and scions from each variety may or may not be in the proper stage of growth on any given day.

That’s what I thought, I purchased from tropicalacres in the past. I am hoping someone will contact me back with my scion inquiry soon. Don’t want to loose whatever limited prime grafting days left here in SoCal.

What gauge wire are you talking about. Bell wire? Bare wire? Covered wire? At my local Home Depot near me I see many gauges copper wire I can buy by the foot. Covered and bare.

I make sure to trim the loose ends so birds don't mistake them for worms or caterpillars or to use for nest building.

Thanks...I guess it works but plastic ties have a limited number of notches to tighten them up..... Maybe you have some that work "notchless".....

With the thick rubber band wrapped , then the zip tie fits snug and maintains the pressure , the notes on the ZT are very fine no slagging 👍
