Full disclosure, I've never seen these before now, so I put my internet search skills to the test. I think the Vietnamese name is Quả chùm chày, roughly "Fruit of the Pestle." I have seen a couple of websites where they were referred to as "pomegranates" but that might be due to a similarity in the flavor or the flesh/seed ratio. Looks like it might grow wild in Vietnam, don't know if it has been cultivated.

It appears to be in the Annonaceae family, most likely in the Uvaria genus.  I have no idea which species.

Hi DeeMango,
Yes Vietnamese name for this fruit is "Chùm Chày". They often collected wild in the middle of Vietnam together with "Dủ Dẻ" (Melodorum siamense / Rauwenhoffia siamensis Scheff) as in the pictures.
But I don't know the ID of "Chùm Chày".

The only references I could find talked about gathering them in the wild, but they weren't sold in the market. People tended to just take them home to their families instead of selling them.

In Central VN they are called "chim-chim", or maybe "chiem-chiem". I remember when we were young we had great time hunting for those wild fruits up in the mountain. The taste is not much to remember.

Hi sapote,
Yes, they also called "Chim Chim" and some other names such as "Chuối chác dẻ", "Nhăn chày",...
Luckily, I've just found the ID for this fruit: Dasymaschalon rostratum Merr. et Chun.
You can check at this link below:
