Looking for info on these indian mango varieties
« on: February 17, 2014, 02:18:33 PM »
I landed a few mango varieties that I am not familiar with and was hoping someone could shed some light on my newest additions.

Langra (I was told this is different from Langra Benarsi)
Son Pari
Shamsul-Asamar

Any info you guys have would be greatly appreciated.

I found this is a rare plant auction catalog from 2008:

"Mangifera indica
‘Shamsul-Asamar’ (Anacardiaceae), arising as a superior seedling at Lodhpuria, Uttar Pradesh, India, ‘Shamsul-Asamar’ literally means “the sun among fruits”—and so it is. A classic oblong mango shape with a mimosa skin free of blemish, the mango is a sight to behold. The flavor, well, mere words cannot do justice. This tree comes as a gift from Mr. Padma Shri Haji Kaleem Ullah, father of mango grafting in India and true believer (in the mango, of course)."

I'm afraid your request is even too eclectic for me or my collection. Let me know if you find them though.  I need some more mango cultivars. I am getting bored with the run of the mill 120 I now have.

Harry,

I already found and purchased them.  Now that the post-purchase euphoria has worn away, I am trying to figure out if I have rubbish or not.

A friend in Cali sent me this about the Son pari - The Son Pari mango is from Gujrat western part of India. Similar in climate where Kesar comes from. Son Pari means Golden Angel in Indian so it must be good.
Son Pari is hybrid developed at Navasari university in Gujrat India

Might be heavenly grown there....but I wouldn't make any grandiose assumptions as to how it will be grown here just based on the name.

I am an optimist Harry.  With a name like "Golden Angel", anything less than a mango that makes me see the face of God and I will be devastated.

I should be able to get you one if you want.  Last I saw they were only available in 7 gallon and very large and well branched for a 7 gal, size wise were more like 15 gallon size.  They were 8 feet tall give or take with a truk caliper of about 2"..
