Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What time of year to plant trees 9B
« on: March 25, 2024, 04:44:00 PM »
if you haven't already done so, you should check out the videos of florida natural farming in vero beach.  seems like he plants trees pretty much throughout the year, and he never irrigates them.  one thing he always does is that he thoroughly removes the medium from the roots before he plants the trees.  i can't personally vouch for this but he swears by it.  usually he plants trees next to a wide variety of other plants, such as bananas, gingers, nitrogen fixers and so on.  they all benefit from each other.  i can personally vouch for companion planting.
Planting different types of plants together is a great way, but I'm a bit confused about how to care for them. If planted along the coast, does salt water have any effect on the growth of these plants? Do they experience a struggle for survival?

I think this user might also be a bot.

What happens with these, as moderator can u just remove? There is a cbd post as well on this forum.

Yes, I can remove them. The bots are getting harder to detect. At first it used to be very clear it was a bot, but now they make posts that are somewhat related to the forum subject area.

The bots also now wait a few weeks before making their first post as well, hoping to go unnoticed and look more natural.

I will delete this post and the bots account in the next few days. I am just leaving this up here so people can see what the new spammers/bots look like.

What are some low-maintenance indoor plants suitable for beginners?

I think this is either a bot or a spammer. A generic question with a website link in their profile.

Hit up the nurseries in Pine Island...Fruitscapes should have some...
Quite a drive to the east coast

Are you just guessing that those nurseries would have a Buxton Spice mango or do you actually know that they do?

Hello, I’m in SW FL, and looking for Buxton Spice mango trees to purchase. Can anyone recommend a place?

Thanks!

Tropical Acres Farms can probably graft one for you as well if you can't find it at Excalibur. They also sell the fruit during mango season.

I’d recommend the Excalibur sapodilla variety. My mom has one and it produces tons of good quality fruit every year without another sapodilla nearby.

Apparently my first reply didnt make it over sorry

Mark Dellerman is local farmer with a small farm here in Wabasso, FL.  He's getting national notoriety and is affectionately titled The Pineapple Man here in the County.  All he grows is Dellerman pineapple.

So if you are pulling over to his roadside, once-a-year weekend, sale - you're getting his fruit.  2 other small businesses carry his fruit in season:  AKOHO, a bakery next to his farm in Wabasso - and Sturgis Lumber in Vero: both have some bins of fruit as well.  He personally restocks those, so again - you're getting Dellerman Gold fruit.

The problem is:  The fruit goes fast.  The big fruit is often sold out within days.  I will post on the forum when he is ready to sell.  Other than the crowns of his fruit, there is no other way to get his material.  Hey may offer up slips... but I've never asked.

On the fruit, some of the fruit have good coconut flavor.  Others have a hint.  All have good vanilla highlights and are incredibly aromatic.  I try to buy 12 a year and taste them.  Strongest coconut fruit crowns go in pots, the others get tossed.

And to answer your question exactly ... the tops are planted - yes.  If you taste the fruit and screen for best taste... you get great plants.

I offer a dozen or so slips and crowns a year at the end of the season - and surprisingly to me, the requests for Dellerman Gold material surpasses even Antigua Black.  Which says a lot about Mark Dellerman's work.

Bottom line, that would be the way to get the plants - from his yearly sale.  Again, I will post the harvest date when he announces it.

I thought not all the fruit were Dellerman Gold and some were MD-2. Is that not the case?

Here is what Lynn said about selling the patent:

"We are trying to find a local grower.  We're asking $1.5 million for the patent which has about 8 years left."

That particular pineapple’s growing matrial is under lock and key.  Though… I’ve heard from someone who’s up on pineapple tasting that the Taiwanese Mango pineapple is very similar.  Tainung 23.  Frankie has done a great job with keeping his Meli Kalima patented and tightly guarded. And finding the Mango pineapple in season is tough unless you are visiting Taiwan or Japan in July/August. The story below about that particular pineapple is interesting.

Interesting article. It led me to this Wikipedia page about "Freedom Pineapples". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_pineapples

Taiwan made a mistake by being so reliant on exporting to China. That seems like it was a disaster waiting to happen.

On the Frankie's Nursery Instagram page, I read that they are no longer growing the Meli Kalima due to a lack of workers. If that is true, I wonder if they will start selling the plants to the public now. I sent an email to them earlier today and I am waiting for a response.

Cool. This is the first I've heard of the Rubyglow. I wonder if anyone is selling it in the US yet.

What cultivar is that in the pic you posted?

In the article you posted it mentioned a Honeyglow pineapple. Is that just a MD-2 that is left to ripen longer on the plant or is it a different cultivar?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Kauai White Sugarloaf Pineapples
« on: February 28, 2024, 09:45:41 PM »
The original cultivar (according to the old breeders) was ‘Monte Lirio’ - supposedly…the original white fleshed pineapple. I heard a similar story of how it was smuggled onto the island.  An article I read in an old issue of PRI Pineapple News backed that story up - according to the author, white pineapple wasn’t grown en mass on Hawaii because Dole wasn't sold on the cultivar, saying the mainland U.S.market wanted gold fleshed pineapple.
They missed out - a great pineapple for sure  - Great pics btw!!!!.

So is it definite that the White Jade, White Sugarloaf, and Kauai White Sugarloaf are all the same?

where can i buy mango seeds online with international shipping ???,

I think mangos are in season in the Southern Hemisphere right now. Do your local grocery stores carry out of season fruit?

Does anyone have any Manoa Sweet acerola/Barbados cherry cuttings or plants for sale?

I am also interested in any other cultivars if they are better than Manoa Sweet.

Thanks!

I am looking to round out my mango trees with early and late season trees. The early variety I am looking at is Edward and the late season variety I am looking at is keitt. I am located on the FL treasure coast and cannot seem to find any local nurseries around me that sells either variety. Does anyone know of a nursery near me that regularly stocks either? If there aren’t any local, are there any good nurseries to have them shipped from? I prefer local though as I generally like to get more mature trees

Excalibur in Lake Worth should have also. It’s a little further south but they may have more mature trees.

Are the ratios based on weight or volume?

5-1-1 normally last 2 plus years.  In your area if you put the tree outside, it surly will become infected by HLB which is an incurable diseases

Thanks.

I plan to keep it in a screened-in patio to hopefully prevent HLB. I am not sure how well that will work, but I will give it a try.

I and many others use the 5-1-1 medium for citrus.  5-1-1 is 5 parts pine bark fines (pieces at 1\4") plus 1 part peat moss, and 1 part perlite.  If you do not want to cut your pieces into the proper size, you can go to any larger pet supply store and purchase a bag of Repti Bark.  Also add dolomite as the calcium source.   Soak the wood chips over night before blending the potting mixture. This formula gives equal parts of solid particles, air, and water when the medium is completely saturated.  This mixture also eliminates the perched water table in the container..

Thanks. How long does this mixture usually last before needing to repot?
