Guavas in NorCal (9B)
« on: March 01, 2019, 11:51:32 AM »
Good morning everyone!
I'm looking to add a Guava or two to my collection and had a few questions:
Do they do OK in pots (If I like the variety it would go in the ground within a couple of years)
I would prefer a sweet variety - and something good for juice (POG)

secondly, where would I source these in northern california? Does anyone have any good varieties for sale?

Thanks!
-Kris

Osh and Lowe’s will carry guavas in late spring mostly from Laverne’s or four winds. I had a Mexican cream against south brick wall in San Jose very sweet had to share with rodents though

I leave all my guavas outdoors, temps drop to high 20's low 30's.
Their leaves turn black and do not completely defoliate.

Come spring they bounce back and explode in growth.
Most of the guavas you buy from the store are either air-layered grafted, just ask to make sure.

I grow guavas in pots and they produce at one foot. They are air layered.
Low temperatures makes their leaves red. Also inside the house they use a lot of water during the winter. They are hungry after light. Without light they start to die back.

The lavern guavas are pretty mediocre.  Treasures of the tropics (Lynn) has 1 gal pink barbie and some other red guava on her website for 17$ a tree.  They might be better than the lacern ones.  Someone in FL would know if they are any good. Her customer service is not great so make sure to email and get a hold of her before you start buying stuff to make sure she is expecting it and can get you want you want.

Looks like she hasn't paid her godaddy bill... I'll message her on facebook and check her out. Thanks.
Fresno is 4 hours from me and out of reach for me fuel wise :P thanks though

I’d bet San Jose has some. Try brickseek.com to check closest inventory of he/lowes

The San Jose Lowes and Home Depot carry Strawberry, Lemon, White Mexican, Pink and some Malaysian (single branch graft)
If you're there the day of arrival, you can likely get one with a fruit dangling, if not one with flower clusters. Can't beat that 1 year guarantee!

A round trip drive to San Jose would cost me well over $120 with current diesel prices :)
Thanks for the recommendations though.

I'll be a little closer to sacramento this weekend and take a look around there.
