Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are these the right size for a jujube?
« on: January 18, 2013, 03:33:27 PM »
How do these compare to other jujubes you've seen. They look bigger than what I usually see on others' trees.

Hi,

Does anyone know if Araticum De Guaratinguetá (Annona Dolabrip) is good-tasting? Would you recommend this plant?

Thanks,
Jaime

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruits to eat with miracle fruit...
« on: December 27, 2012, 12:49:41 PM »
I want to know which fruits pair up nicely with miracle fruit. I had some not-so-ripe mulberries after popping a miracle fruit berry in my mouth and it made them excessively sweet, sort of like eating an orange with miracle fruit. Overwhelming!

What other fruits work well with miracle fruit?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Taste of cacao fruit?
« on: December 27, 2012, 10:49:14 AM »
Can someone tell me if the actual Cacao pulp flavor is any good? I hear that you can make a juice from it, but I was interested in knowing the flavor quality. I don't have a tree, and have always debated whether to have this tree in my limited backyard space.

If the real attraction are the seeds, and making chocolate with it, I think I'd rather just buy the chocolate commercially.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pentagonia grandiflora - Anyone growing it?
« on: December 17, 2012, 10:06:26 PM »
Is anyone growing Pentagonia grandiflora? Or has anyone tried the fruit? I may be getting some seeds soon but wanted to know if the fruit was worth it?

Thanks,
Jaime

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mistreating plants to promote flowering...
« on: December 13, 2012, 02:53:20 PM »
Hmm, I have heard people say that mistreating a plant or tree by hitting it, damaging it, ripping off its leaves, etc. is a way to promote flowering.

I have also heard that it is totally not true. I guess that it may depend on the species.

Ripping the leaves off of certain chill-requiring plants makes sense, though.

Does anyone have a good explanation of this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Gold Nugget loquat quality?
« on: December 12, 2012, 06:56:17 PM »
Does anyone have a Gold Nugget loquat? If so, what's the flavor as compared to the other locally available varieties?

Mine is starting to flower for the first time.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Engkala hardiness
« on: December 09, 2012, 11:02:03 AM »
Does anyone know the hardiness of the engkala plant?  My seedlings are showing some serious leaf burn but I didn't think they were that sensitive to cool weather.

Thanks,
Jaime

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mountain Papaya - Carica pubescens
« on: December 09, 2012, 10:51:54 AM »
Has anyone tasted mountin ppaya and can compare the flavor to regular papaya? I'll know soon as my play has a few untie fruit at the moment.

I believe it has a tart flavor when ripe that needs to be sweetened.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / The rats win... Again!!!
« on: November 15, 2012, 12:25:12 PM »
Grrrrr... This is really frustrating.

I recently discovered a few pots had almost all of the seeds dug out of them. I had just planted a bunch of rare seeds, including cherapu, rainforest plum and pulasan, in them. I had even thought of covering those pots with some aluminum mesh. Too late now!

Luckily they left a few and I'm hoping these still germinate.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Which one's the real kei apple seedling?
« on: November 04, 2012, 11:28:16 AM »
I have 2 seedlings coming up in a pot where I planted some Kei Apple seeds.

Can anyone tell me which one is correct, and what the other might be?

I looked online and thought the narrow leaf one was correct but then I saw another image online that resembled the wider leaf seedling.

Thanks,
Jaime

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Looking to do a 3-way... trade, that is!
« on: November 03, 2012, 07:44:54 PM »
Another forum member is looking for a sour orange tree, of which i have one, and is willing to trade a jackfruit or a lemondrop mangosteen for it, but I'm not a jackfruit lover and I already have a lemondrop.

So, if someone is interested in one of the above and has something to trade, please let me know.

Thanks,
Jaime

I will be attending a conference in San Diego from Oct. 24 - 27, and will have a little time for tropical fruit field trips. Can anyone recommend gardens and nurseries to visit in the area?

Do any local San Diego members have any seedlings or seeds they'd like to offer for trade or purchase?

Thanks,
Jaime

The small red fruit of the Coyolito Palm is used to make wine, and jam, and also eaten out of hand, although not of the best flavor, in my opinion. But my wife really likes this fruit.

If anyone has experience with this plant, and maybe knows where I can get one in South Florida, please let me know.

Thanks,
Jaime

Does anyone have any seeds, seedlings, or know where I can source them? Opinions on fruit taste and quality, as well as cultural requirements would also be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jaime

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Miami-Dade Adopt-a-Tree event today!!!
« on: September 14, 2012, 10:31:18 AM »
For those of you that live in Miami-Dade, the county is holding their first Adopt-a-Tree event of the year today.

Here is the info:

Saturday, September 15th, J.C. Bermudez Park, 3100 NW 87th Avenue, City of Doral
Doors open at 9 a.m. for both events. Trees will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis - while supplies last.

Miami-Dade single-family or duplex homeowners are eligible to receive 2 FREE trees per year, even if they have adopted trees in past years.

The best part is that they will be giving out jaboticabas this time, as well as other fruit and ornamental trees, including mulberry and longan. Here is the website:
http://www.miamidade.gov/development/trees/adopt-a-tree.asp#0

I'll be there to get my replacement jabo and mulberry both of which died this year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / UM Arboretum tropical fruit tour
« on: September 13, 2012, 09:12:52 AM »
Passing this on from the UM Arboretum in case anyone is interested: :D

Please join me for a tour of the Arboretum this Saturday at 9:00 AM. This tour will feature the Sapindales Order, the subject of one of our 14  Exhibits. The Sapindales is a very interesting plant order that includes some of our favorite fruits like mango, citrus, cashew, lychee and longan, as well as some less loveable plants like poison ivy and Brazilian pepper. It also includes some very important medicinal plants like Neem as well as some of our most commonly used and loved native trees like gumbo limbo, West Indian mahogany, and paradise tree. We will also discuss and see some of the recent plant additions to our Arboretum. The tour will start at the south end of the Arboretum where the concrete picnic table and the stone semicircle bench are located. Free parking is available in the lots along San Amaro Drive to the south of the Arboretum.

Good News!, Good News! - At Craig Morrell's excellent talk on plant nutrition and fertilizers last week, I mentioned that I had  added 3 of the 4 previously missing plants that are featured on our Exhibit signs (Euphorbia pulcherrima (Poinsettia) for the Euphorbiaceae and Other Malpighiales Exhibit;  Anacardium occidentale (Cashew) for the Sapindales Exhibit; and Theobroma cacao (Chocolate) for the Maya Cocoa Garden Exhibit), but I was having trouble locating a plant of Kola acuminata (Kola Nut) that is featured on our sign for the Malvales Exhibit. Well, I am happy to announce that I located one this week and planted it today so ALL of the plants featured on our exhibit signs are now present and growing in the Arboretum.

Welcome back to Lundy Clarke, who joined us for Craig's talk last week. Lundy was part of the Gifford Arboretum Committee previously and her renewed interest and support is welcome.

Regards to all,
Steve

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Unlabeled fruit at the Fairchild Garden!
« on: August 05, 2012, 01:04:28 PM »
Hi,

I saw this tree with fruits, but no label. Can anyone ID it?

By the way, the Fairchild Botanical Tropical Garden has free entry every Sunday this month.

Sorry about the bad pics. Too sunny at the park to check the quality.

I'm sure there are plenty of places. I've just never seen them advertised here.

Or if someone wants to trade a seedling just let me know and I will see what I have.

I suddenly got the urge to grow them after watching a YouTube video!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Years to fruit for Sour Orange?
« on: July 31, 2012, 09:58:29 AM »
Hi,

I've been trying to find info online on how many years a seedling Sour Orange takes to fruit, but can't come across any definitive answer. I know it will vary, but mine are about 5-6 years old and they haven't even flowered yet!

We use sour oranges a lot at home for cooking, so it would be great to start getting fruit from the 2 trees I have.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Low-chill Cherry trees?
« on: July 27, 2012, 11:34:11 AM »
Does anyone know from where I can order some low-chill cherry trees?

And equally important, does anyone have any of these trees in South Florida and can share how they have fared a far as fruiting?

Jaime

Hi,

I have a low-chill plum tree, can't recall the variety, and it's peculiar in that it has some branches with very long leaves, while most of the others have very short leaves. Is this common for plum or peach trees?
