Post by: fruitlovers on April 12, 2012, 01:52:34 AM: Interesting, thanks for posting. I got to eat one of these fruits, now known as flying saucer fruit, i think coined by Bill Whitman. Had a nice taste, strong, with some tartness and very juicy. I have a couple of large trees which i'm hoping will soon start fruiting.
Here is a photo of some fruits just starting to form. When fully grown the fruit looks very much like a scalloped squash.

In Brazil they are called Cambuci and is native to the Atlantic forest, the tree grow to 3-5m high and takes up to 10 years to start to produce! But, with improved seeds, the tree can start to produce in about 4 -5 years! The tree is well adapted to Subtropical climate, which is freak'n AWESOME!!!

I think in Brazil cambuci is mostly appreciated as a fruit to make products with, not for eating out of hand. But i found it pleasant to eat out of hand also, though a bit tart. This genus Campomanesia has a lot of fruits that are good and almost totally unknown outside of Brazil, and most unknown even inside of Brazil.

Yes, but alot of people will eat the fruit out of the hand! I would:)

There sure are alot of Gabirobas that are excellent! from what I have read! As you said, some of them are unknown in or out!

I will do some digging for you...I reckon they should have a similar treatment like the other Campomanesia sp.

Helton Josué has a more detailed info on Cambuci. From what i read, Cambuci is quite delicate and slow growing in the first and second year, then the tree will gradually pick up the pace as the years progress.

BMc How old is your friend's Cambuci?

Soren, there is no proper info on Campomanesia laurifolia...is this badboy growing slow for you as well?

I now have a nice seedling of c. phaea, so will follow the instructions on the site. My friend also has a c. lineatafolia in heavy flower, so hopefully ill get seeds of that too soon!
