Isn’t c-35 rootstock highly incompatible with any type of eureka? If so why am I finding all these trees here at big box stores with them grafted together?  Am I wrong or do they not care and are just trying to make money? How long does it take to show incompatibility? Their grafts look really good so I’m just wondering.

Citrus General Discussion / Meyer lemon on carrizo good or bad?
« on: April 04, 2024, 04:35:00 PM »
I found a Meyer lemon at Lowe’s on carrizo rootstock. I want to plant it in ground. Is this a good idea? I read that rootstock does not to well in high PH soils but if I amended the soil every year would it do ok?

Citrus General Discussion / Variegated minneola
« on: March 24, 2024, 08:40:33 PM »
Soooo excited. I just bought a Miewa kumquat (it’s been in my list for a long time) and a variegated minneola from Madison citrus nursery. And it’s sooooo beautiful. I’m so excited. And there are so many more I want.

Citrus General Discussion / Just bought a Miewa kumquat.
« on: March 20, 2024, 02:47:49 PM »
I just bought a Miewa kumquat knowing it was a slow grower but know I’m  wondering if I made a mistake after reading some post about people’s Miewa’s. Mine is on x-639 root stock. Anyone have good success with their Miewa? I can also put it in the ground I would just rather put it in a pot just in case we move in the next couple of years. Thoughts?

Citrus General Discussion / Can I use old pot?
« on: March 19, 2024, 05:47:03 PM »
I want to use an old ceramic glazed pot for my new tree. But I don’t know why my last lime tree  died. Is there any risk in putting my new minneola tree in the same pot with different soil?

What is people opinion about using foliage pro and osmocote plus together vs jacks fertilizer?

Citrus General Discussion / Perlite size
« on: January 23, 2024, 02:44:50 PM »
Does the size of perlite in a 5-1-1 mix matter? Can you use a pine and fir bark mix instead of just pine or CHC chips?

Citrus General Discussion / What if I repot now?
« on: January 17, 2024, 01:10:21 PM »
I realized that maybe one reason why my naval isn’t keeping fruit is I haven’t repotted in 5 years. Can I repot it now and still get blossoms and fruit this year? I can either still leave it outside or bring it in the house after repotting. Then I will use a fert high in K like millet suggested.

Citrus General Discussion / 5-1-1
« on: January 10, 2024, 09:25:55 PM »
I’m going to switch my citrus to 5-1-1 mix soon. I have used coco coir chunks in the past and had great success but I have heard you can use pine chips. What’s the difference? Is one better? Other than pine being cheaper.

Citrus General Discussion / Citrus cocktail
« on: December 29, 2023, 12:42:13 AM »
I’m thinking of adding a citrus cocktail tree to my life but wondered what peoples opinions are about them. My space is so limited and there are so many trees that I want but don’t have the space for.

I have had this naval orange for 4-5 yrs. It gave me fruit the first 1-2 yrs but nothing since. It flowered amazing last year but I lost all of it. I tried spraying it with urea 2 years ago and I still lost the fruit. I have it in the turf mix that others have used here but I have not consistently fertilized it. I use the jacks fert but I’m thinking of changing to osmocote plus and foliage pro in hopes the osmocote will help it get fertilized more. I really really want fruit this year any tips? Would planting it in the ground right now help? I live zone 8b.

Citrus General Discussion / Help, I’m loosing all my Meyer lemons
« on: May 25, 2023, 08:09:44 PM »
Help! I’m loosing all my Meyer lemons. How do I make it stop? They are almost grape size and I’m afraid the golf ball sized are next. I bought it at star nursery in Las Vegas for my mother in law a couple of weeks ago. And bought one with lemons on it so she would like it better. I moved it to a semi shady spot then it started loosing the really small lemons so I moved it to a sunny spot. I also sprayed it with the correct amount of neem oil because aphids were attacking 2 near by trees. I also pulled back a few 1-2 inches of soil and added compost. At that time I noticed the feeder roots were at least 3-4 inches down and that compared to my other citrus the soil drained a lot slower. I have been fertilizing it and it has a new flush of leaves. It was just loosing the tiny lemons but now it’s gradually loosing larger and larger lemons. It’s possible I over watered it in the beginning but I haven’t watered it in a week and it’s still dropping lemons.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Good resource for grafting?
« on: May 21, 2023, 09:46:18 PM »
Is there a good resource on how to graft and the do’s and dont’s of grafting? This forum is amazing but it’s hard to sift through everything. I’m looking for a book or a website that I can sit down and read in my spare time. Any suggestions?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Macrophylla Vs FD vs C-35 root stock
« on: May 18, 2023, 05:22:45 PM »
I just purchased a Meyer lemon from Las Vegas not even thinking about root stock. It turns out the root stock is Macrophylla. What are the pros and cons of that root stock?  It will not be living at my house it was a gift and will be in zone 5 so indoors in the winter. I also was going to buy myself one from the same nursery until I realized that rootstock might not be very cold hardy.

So far I have gathered that Macrophylla, is not very cold tolerant, FD is but is very slow growing and that C-35 is cold tolerant and slow  growing. I’m not sure if I got that correct or not.
I also just bought an owari on C-35 that I plan to plant outside with protection. I also want to buy a Meyer lemon, and Meiwa komquat for outside. For inside either another Meyer or a pink lemonade, and a lime. What rootstock is the best for those situations. I would rather have a tree grow faster and produce more fruit and have to trim it than have one that takes forever to grow and bare fruit. Any suggestions?

Citrus General Discussion / Very thorny Meyer lemon
« on: April 04, 2022, 04:16:24 PM »
So after having another baby and falling off the radar and loosing another citrus (which always happens when I have a baby) I went to my local nursery to buy a meyer lemon and the thorns were sooooo huge on them. I don’t remember my last meyer having giant thorns. Is that normal?

Citrus General Discussion / Are lemon and limes usually grafted?
« on: March 20, 2021, 10:52:03 PM »
Are lemon and limes usually grafted like most other citrus? Also I just bought an owari mandarin and I don’t think it is grafted. Was that a mistake?

I bought a low biuret urea and no instructions came with it. I looked on their website and could not find anything either. Can someone please tell me what the ratio for mixing would be.

I hope everyone had a good holiday. I have a few questions about my lime tree.  It seemed to be doing really well this summer, but there has not been any fruit that has stayed on it since I bought it a year and a half ago. I brought it inside about mid nov and it was green and looking good. Then it bloomed and it started getting fruit that was hanging on. About a week ago I noticed some spider mites And noticed a lot of the fruit starting to drop.  So I sprayed the tree with dawn Soap and water About 3 days ago. Since then more fruit have dropped and not just the little ones. And the leaves started looking veiny. Does anyone know why it’s doing this and why I can’t ever keep any fruit. It is potted in the miracle grow garden soil mixed with the turf. I think I put it in to large of a pot last year because that was what I had. It is next to 2 south/ east south/west windows. I added rabbit poop for fertilizer but only added it to the top of the soil because it’s so high in nitrogen and have not added any other fertilizer in a while.

I have had a lot of citrus and the only tree that has done well was my meyer lemon in CHC. Maybe I should go back to CHC. That tree froze and boy do I miss it.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Can’t get rid of fungus gnats, any ideas?
« on: January 09, 2020, 03:46:33 PM »
I have an infestation of fungus gnats. Every time I water my lime tree hundreds of gnats come out and swarm the house and windows by the plants. I have tried neem oil with soap and diatomaceous earth. The diatomaceous earth works a little bit not enough. I still have sooooo many. I’m sure they have laid tons of eggs to. Any suggestions?

Can anyone please tell me what is going on with my orange tree? It was doing just fine until about a week or 2 ago. Half the leaves are yellowing and the other half are curling and looking almost variegated.

23
I can’t figure out what is eating my leaves. I don’t see any pests on the trees and is there something wrong with some of the other leaves that are curling and browning? I have used  diatomaceous earth before in my garden to kill something that was eating my potato leaves but I had to put it on the leaves themselves. Any suggestions?
These are an orange and lime.

I have decided I want to try growing some muscadine grapes. They do well in the heat and humidity but will they grow in dry hot weather? Has anyone grown them in weather similar to Las Vegas?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / What is your favorite grape?
« on: May 07, 2019, 11:07:01 AM »
What is your favorite grape and why? I am new to growing grapes. I remember eating grapes off my uncles grape vines. They were small and had a lot of juice and flavor and I really wanted to plant grapes like that. I just bought a seedless Thompson and a  black monuka . I didn’t want the Thompson but we don’t have many options here, but now I realize I should have bought something online. I’m in a 8b zone with high summer temps. What would be some good grapes to grow here?
