Grafted mangosteen progress
« on: August 25, 2015, 06:39:42 PM »
These were only grafted about a week and a half ago so I am assuming there isnt a real connection yet but I'm still a little encouraged. First one was grafted onto a mangosteen I had planted in the ground a few months ago. Second one was grafted by Warren in Puerto Rico and is still potted. I thought this one was a goner at first. The new growth molded and turned black but now it seems to be pushing out green leaves. I have 6 graded onto mangosteen root stock and 2 grafted onto Yellow mangosteen stock all together. I'll be happy with one good one.

Amazing. Was this all during your PR trip? Would be cool to see the progress in a couple months.

How many days after grafting second fellow was travelling already? If I understood correctly that's pretty good result considering stress of travel at such weakened period.

John came up with a method of packing his plants that would have foiled 99.9% of USPS's attempts of destroying a package.  He purchased some inexpensive plastic tubes...like a cheaper version of PVC.  Had them cut in 2 foot sections.  His plants were able to perfectly squeeze down into the tubes allowing him to keep them in the original soil and nursery container/bag.  This made for a very snug, very safe and as stress-free as possible trip home.  No crushed or folded in half box with this!  It was truly thinking outside the BOX!!   :o

Both are still green. Haven't noticed anything pushing through the tape yet but I have them taped pretty heavy so I can't get a good look. I forgot that I had one of the double rootstocks in a pot so I actually have 3 grafted. All together I have 6 grafts on mangosteen stock, 3 on yellow mangosteen, one on madrono, and one on magnifolia.

Next update. Two grafted onto mangosteen have died. One that was double stone grafted onto yellow mangosteen died. All others still look good with 2 still pushing out green leaves. Still have 6 on mangosteen stock, 2 on yellow mangosteen, one on madrono, and one on grandifolia.

Looks like at least a couple successes. 2 of the 4 grafted in Puerto Rico look like takes. The ones I grafted here I'm still not sure about. Some are still green and a few have died.
