Gevuina Avellana ( Chilean hazelnut)
« on: February 26, 2017, 03:13:21 PM »
Hello, does anyone coltivate Gevuina Avellana? I read that the fruits have similar taste of Macadamia but the tree is more cold hardier than Macadamia. The fruits when are ripe becomes black. The tree is native to Chile and is cold hardy about -12 C .  The flowers are bisexual and they are flowering in december. The tree can grow upt to 20m.

I've killed 2-3 plants before that were started form seed but can't find any seed any more to try again. There in proteaceae family so any fertilisers high in phosphate should be avoided. If you find a seed source please let me know!

Burnt Ridge in OR. use to have them.  Heat is what gets them.

It seems that they need mycorrhizae on theyr roots.Ive also killed a few from those trees from Seattle.Right now im waiting for really fresh seeds directly from Valdivia in Chile and i will try them again but this time im gonna sow them with a mycorrhizae supplement. Im also receiving Embothrium coccineum ,another proteaceae from the same place wich i plan to use as a shade tree for gevuina
