Thank you all so much for the kind words and the suggestions. I think a trip like this will be so much more memorable and enjoyable to be a little bit off the beaten path. Plus how often might i get the chance to be guided through fruit farms and possibly even taste samples of such exotic fruits! I will be sure to reach out to both Gwen and Robin

Tropical Fruit Discussion / May try to plan a trip to PR for 30th
« on: April 30, 2015, 03:40:38 PM »
Hi forum,
It's been a long while since I've been back on here. Life is busy - in a good way. In the last two years Ashley and I got married, and bought a house together. Work has been picking up as well and the business is growing. We moved into a bigger office which has been terrific. Last summer we built a pretty large container garden and grew some great veggies. With all of this spent time, sadly most of our container grown tropical fruit plants have dried up over the winter from neglect :-(. We still have some jaboticabas, a few guava varieties, and a few other randoms including loquat and fig.

So this year, (September) I'll be turning 30, and the wife has pushed for us to do something fun and memorable. And I agree. Life is short, and it's been going at a faster and faster pace. Active effort needs to be made to stop and smell the flowers. So we started looking at doing a trip to mexico, same area we did our honeymoon(riviera maya). It of course was beautiful and relaxing but a bit, 'the same'.  But i got to thinking..I've always wanted to go to Puerto Rico and I thought this might be a great opportunity. We'd really like to combine a nice relaxing resort stay, with the ability to see and explore some of the old city, and the jungle. I would also love the opportunity to explore some new tropical fruits. We would only be able to do a week, and would be on a moderate budget, but from a quick look, it doesn't seem that flights or hotels are terribly expensive so thats good!

So that's where i turn to you all. I'm not exactly sure how to begin planning out a trip like that(how does one go about finding/planning a mini-fruit excursion?) as well as being able to just explore areas like the jungle, safely. Seems like most/all flights would come into San Juan, but then where to stay would be up to debate so that we could still visit the city, as well as reach out to the more jungle-y tropical places. We are not exactly seasoned travelers, having only stayed at inclusive resorts. I'm also not sure if mid September will still provide a season to get to enjoy said tropical fruits.

I certainly appreciate any insight or suggestions

Thanks!

Luke

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Miracle fruit - no effect on coffee ?
« on: June 18, 2013, 06:45:04 PM »
my favorites are pinneapple, kiwis and limes! yum.

But again, i think the distinction is coffee is not sour, it is bitter. if you've tried a grapefruit with miracle fruit, it's sweet, but you still can taste the bitterness of the rind.

Looking good! Our yehuda isn't flowering this year but we've been a little shy on the watering and I think its been holding it back. I tried two attempts at side veneer last summer without luck. Did you have better takes when in the green stage or more woody stage?

Wow that is amazing. I thought the trees had to be much larger before flowering. It's hard to see just how big is your tree actually? A local nursery just got 2 trees in. must resist.

Congratulations! 8)

whoops! I only read the rules on the first page and have really like how that photo turned out.  how about this one:

Ashley and I first time ever eating a Jackfruit

A photo of a couple loosing their Jackfruit virginity?  Sounds too juicy for a family board to me.  I hope it isn't disqualified  ;)

How long did it take you guys to process the Jackfruit?  I must admit that I'm really very bad at processing Jackfruit since the arils are surrounded by tough rubbery strands.  The first time I took apart a Jackfruit it took me around 3 hours; while I've gotten better at it I think I need to take a "disassembling a Jackfruit 101" course.

Hahaha that's funny

That jack stood no chance. We ate the entire thing in about 45 minutes. It was i think a 15lb fruit? smaller for sure but damn tasty!!

I've seen this a lot as well. Always funny to see the seedling characteristics. Steven, you had a crazy one with long lance shaped leaves, like a mango!

Though I have never tried, I consistently hear that 'Violette de Bordeaux' is a great tasting variety.

So that's what I'm doing wrong! I use moist paper towel and get lots of issues with mold. Will switch to sphagnum.

Thanks!

Looks pretty good to me. Ours seems to grow fast but also yellow/drop leaves as well. I think the lifespan of each leaf is just shorter on these trees.

Damn I almost got seed of this because of it being edible and showy flowers but decided against it since I'd never heard of anyone growing it only that it is invasive.

Tomas,

I got to taste these fruits at my friends house the other day (Downy Myrtle, Rhodomyrtus tomentosa)...apparently it grows wild here in FL, but man it taste amazing!  Like blueberry/blackberry jam.

The skins are tart, but you just eat the inside of the fruits, and the small seeds...they really blew my mind!

I'm going to grow a few.

I hear the tree is tough as nails, and has an amazingly beautiful display of pink/red flowers, somewhat similar to feijoa.

An odorless red durian. Something i'll have to add to the bucket list. Although the flavor description you've just posted makes me think otherwise haha. Can't knock it till you've tried it I guess!

They all look tasty to me! I notice how thick the skin is on the klambuku
