Mulberry Trees As Street Trees In Front of House?
« on: May 01, 2019, 11:44:30 AM »
I have some space available along the street in my front yard and I was thinking of planting Mulberry trees. There used to be 3 ancient Hackberrys trees there... but Alabama power in their infinite wisdom pruned them to death to keep the branches out of the lines overhead. Now I have 3 positions open.
I have several specimens of Pakistani and Shangri-la available. Are these suitable in your opinion?
Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks.

Kevin

Great shade trees - as long as you're not going to get in trouble for staining sidewalk or roadways...

No sidewalks... so no problem with that.

Thanks.

Could someone comment on the fruit of Shangri-la.
I rooted them from cuttings last summer so have no idea of the fruiting qualities.
My Pakistani are delicious and I have rooted cuttings from this tree to plant out.
Any preferences?

Thanks.

I think I have a Shangri La Mulberry but the common names confuse me.
I have 11 types of mulberries and it has the largest leaves of any of them.
Recently I had 5 mulberries ripe in my yard and I let a couple people sample
all 5. I had the shatoot white, Pakistan Black, Thai everbearing, the mystery
which I got from a guy who called it an Emperor Mulberry he bought in Homestead, Fl
and the large leaved one I call Shangri La.
Both people said the Shangri La was their favorite.
It is a big tree. I have seen them 30' x 30'.
It is a very consistent producer also with.
Juicy staining large fruit! I even saw a woodpecker eating my fruit

Achetadomestica,
I've also got those Thai Dwarf Mulberries I got from you awhile back.
They are sort of pets for the time being.
More like backyard plants.
Am I right in thinking they are a smaller, more bush-like plant?
BTW... I got a Thai Dwarf Mulberries from Adam at Flying Fox Fruits that's bearing fruit in the pot.
Just won't stop bearing.

The Thai dwarfs are the same tree. My 5 foot tree produced the most fruit
I have ever seen for that size. It was the earliest producer and the fruit
is a little crunchy and barely stains your hand. I ate large handfuls everyday
for a couple months. The taste really grew on me and it was the only
thing to eat for a while.

I have a mulberry on the street side of my property, it fills out my front yard nicely.

It stains the road, but nobody cares.

I never liked mulberries until I tried a Tice. By far the best I ever tasted, but there are many I haven’t tried.

squirrels get to mine before they even hit the ground.
mine do lose their leaves in the winter so you would have some bare looking trees till spring is another consideration.

The squirrels and I already have an uneasy truce. Birds too.
I'm leaning toward 3 Shangri-Las across the front and 2 Pakistanis - one on either side.
