Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango production
« on: October 06, 2019, 08:29:33 AM »
Hey mango nuts! I got a question. My neighbor Waters incessantly. Is a bit senile and just loves watering things :-) well it seems to be good for the tree growth, but I have had some problems with production. If the tree doesn't have a dry period to go dormant, will it still bloom? Thanks in advance for your replies

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Inducing Lychee bloom Florida
« on: December 31, 2018, 07:23:24 AM »
Last year, when it was in the low 40's at night I put ice on the lychee. It bloomed. Is this actually an effective way to do this or coincidence?  I put about 50# of ice around the roots on top of the soil. It lasted all night and half the next day

My Dot's new leaves are curling  :-[ maybe I over did the fertilizer? I put some palm fert that I had left over along with a couple handfuls of calcium. To top it off i sprayed with some nutrient spray. Maybe I over did it???

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lisa vs Gefner
« on: July 09, 2016, 09:03:35 AM »
I want to plant a tree in my sandy soil yard in FL about half mile from the ocean. I went to Excalibur, and I told them I wanted a Gefner. They took me  around and we picked out a nice tree that had a fruit on it. I considered this a good sign. We went back to pay for it and I asked what kind it was and they said Lisa. The guy said that Lisa is better, and the lady that was there should know, because she has worked there for 20 years. She mumbled something about Gefners having more worms in the fruits and drove off. They said I could trade it for a Gefner if I wanted, but Lisa is better. I know from looking at the threads that there is quite a bit of opinion about this. All I want is a tree that is productive and tasty, with no fuss and can be maintained at about 15 ft in south Florida near the coast. Thanks for your input

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help with lychee!
« on: June 02, 2016, 07:53:28 AM »
Hi, I have some questions about my Lychee. This is my first crop! I'm very happy to have gotten this far! I iced the tree with 50# of ice during a cold snap. I don't know if it would have bloomed anyway, but I thought it would be worth a try.

1) I am leaving town for a week. The pictures show that they are not all red. They taste good, maybe not as sweet as they will be. Should I harvest some now and leave the rest on the tree? Harvest all right now? Will the animals and birds eat all my fruit before I return?

2) Is it a Brewster or Mauritius, I forgot. I got it from Excalibur.

3) How should I cut it back to keep it small? I saw that cutting some of the middle out is good.

Thanks -Paul

Citrus General Discussion / Citrus Greening
« on: January 19, 2016, 09:27:24 AM »
Hi, My Honey Bell has citrus  greening. I heard the only cure is to hot box the tree for 24 hours. Is that correct? Will it bear good quantities of fruit, even if it has the disease? Thanks -Paul
