Potted Orange Tree Help
« on: June 25, 2019, 08:37:00 PM »
I'm needing some advice/help on my potted Orange tree, I'm in Utah so i understand the odds are not in my favor. I've put the tree outside for the past week or so and it started to have a lot of new growth but the new little leaves are starting to curl up and a few of the big leaves have started droop and aren't as green as the other leaves. BUT the big leaves were slightly drooping before the new growth too. This is the most success I've had with a citrus tree so far so I'm really hoping to be able to figure out how to help it. I'm posting some pictures of the bad leaves

Your tree looks fine.  I don't see much to worry about.

It looks healthy to me.  Is this a seedling?  Or grafted?

What is the round cylinder around the base of the trunk?

I'm not sure if it's a seedling or grafted, I bought it from a nursery but the original pot said "de vroomen garden products" on it. The circle at the bottom of it is just a little cardboardish stabilizer type thing. I think I'll cut it off just in case. So a few of the new leaves curling up is normal? Sorry for my ignorance I've never had an orange tree get this size yet. I'll also take a picture of the trunk to see if it might be grafted

Sammaorange all new growth is a light green.  The new growth will become a darker green as it matures.  Some leaf curl is normal, excess leaf curl can occur from under watering.   Thank you for becoming a member of this forum----Welcome.

The picture of the trunk is too blurry for me to tell, but check for a graft line.  Im not sure if oranges grow from cuttings easily.  If it is grown from seed it will take forever to flower/fruit

Good to know, I'm pretty sure it is grafted

It's either a seedling or rooted cutting.

Rooted cutting to me.

Weather can cause this effect on tender new leaves. Nothing to fear at this moment. Just assure that you keep it warm and never stand freeze

Aphids will cause a much bigger curling effect, but in the opposite direction, producing convex leaves. Dry spell and some and deficiencies can cause concave leaves but would be much more pronounced..

As you are in a very cold climate, maybe you should eval to regraft it in a Yuzu to achieve a better cold resistance of roots and a more forgiving indoor plant. You can't culture it in the garden in any case. Oranges aren't hardy.

It must be the remains of the sphagnum block in which the plant has been rooted.
