Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango scion advice
« on: February 26, 2021, 10:19:14 PM »
I have happened upon some very special mango scions and am keen to graft them, but quite a few have signs of fungal growth. What’s the best approach to cleaning them up before grafting? Very mild bleach solution?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / To cut Lychee flowers?
« on: July 24, 2020, 05:42:57 PM »
I have a young Erdon Lee Lychee which is flowering, the tree is too small to hold fruit. Has anyone had experience with cutting flowers when first appearing or waiting till small fruit set before cutting?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lemon Zest confirmation or otherwise
« on: April 10, 2020, 05:19:40 PM »
Anyone with Lemon Zest able to confirm if this looks like typical new growth?

The leaves do have a citrusy smell as well. It’s from LZ seed sent to a friend here in Australia, so I’m trying as best I can to confirm trueness to type

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Melicoccus oliviformis Air Layer
« on: February 08, 2020, 06:14:07 AM »
Thought some might find this interesting, I have one tree grown from seed of this Supposed dwarf, self-fertile Melicoccus oliviformis. Hopefully this air layering attempt works well as I have no other way to propagate it that I can think of, until it fruits of course.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Digging up inground trees
« on: February 07, 2020, 03:44:41 PM »
I’m wondering if anyone has experience with digging up garcinias to move to a different location. I have 2 Luc’s about 3’ tall and growing well but there is a strong possibility I may be moving in 12 months and I would like to take them if there’s a reasonable chance of survival.
I have a few jaboticabas as well about the same size which i am hoping will be somewhat easier

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Compost for warmth
« on: October 13, 2019, 07:10:45 AM »
I’m interested to know if anyone here has tried using heat generated from a composting heap to keep cold sensitive plants warm through winter? I had some large piles of wood chip that were too hot to keep your hand in when approaching the centre, which got me to thinking this might be a cheap, relatively safe, longish term source of heat. I’m sure others have tried and hopefully refined this idea.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Canistel experiment
« on: August 11, 2019, 07:10:31 AM »
First report on my Canistel experiment.

I grew 2 seedlings from a friends fruit planted about 3 years ago. Fruit were small sweet and moist but i read canistel is not true to type. I planted both in the one hole and about 2 years ago grafted wood from mature ‘Lyndall’ tree.

More recently ( 4-5 months ago) I grafted some of the branches with 2 other varieties, tipped the seedling leader at 1.5m leaving only 2 branches of the original seedling.
Both the ‘Lyndall’ and seedling tree are similar size (though quite different shape)  but what has surprised me is it is the seedling that is flowering first not the grafted tree.
There is plenty more to go in this experiment, not least of which will be the quality of this fruit if any set.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee pruning
« on: August 04, 2019, 06:26:57 AM »
I have a young Erdon Lee lychee, maybe 3’ tall which is flowering all over. Any suggestions as to how best to manage this? I want the tree to put its energy into growing, perhaps let it set fruit then pick off?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Multi-grafted Jaboticabas
« on: February 18, 2019, 09:23:15 PM »
Hi all, I have recently grafted a bunch of Jaboticabas (about 10 varieties) onto 5 different rootstocks and am interested to hear others experience of how multi-grafted trees go in the medium to long term.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Soursop on Rollinia?
« on: February 03, 2019, 04:12:04 PM »
The information is probably on here somewhere but I thought it quicker to ask. Has anyone tried and succeeded with grafting soursop onto Rollinia rootstock? I had a couple of spare scions and it was either try it or waste them.

I have had good success with grafting generally but have had no luck with my limited attempts with Jackfruit and Starapple. I am wondering if it is due to the excess sap when I cut them ? My Canistels and Ross plants grafted well with plenty of white sap though, any ideas/tips are welcome as I will be trying again in a few months
