Persimmon recommendations - non-astringent for zone10
« on: February 11, 2020, 12:23:35 AM »
Just planted out a South Florida persimmon (AKA Hudson) and was looking to graft a non-astringent type to one of the codominant leaders.

Are there any non-astringent types that do well in zone 10 FL coast?

Thanks for your help!

A great, very productive little tree.  It stayed very small for me, however.  The fruit is small.  Not as sweet as other persimmons I've eaten, but still it's a persimmon, and it does well here.  Also, it's definitely astringent until soft.  Any information to the contrary is inaccurate.

Cool, that’s what I was told was that it’s an astringent type and seems to also be consistent with what was on the forum here and what you’re saying.  Glad to hear it’s been productive and decent quality- looking to add on a non-astringent type, but wasn’t sure if there are any that do well down here?

Triumph also does well here, but it's astringent and although larger (but still a small tree) bears less fruit than South Florida.  A pretty tree.  Don't know if there's a non-astringent persimmon that does well here.

Awesome!  That is good to hear, definitely going to check those out.

Are persimmons relatively easy to graft?  I’m assuming the time would be around now before they start pushing spring growth- will probably have to wait til next year.
