What is the best longan?
« on: February 06, 2012, 01:55:19 AM »
Hey,

So far for me Sri Champoo was best ever, firm, grape like, with perfume after taste....amazing!!! Late season, to if I recall.

Whipped Kohalas sorry ass.

Have heard one called Fortune eye is the very best, but a poor producer....

I am going to airlayer these two varieties this months at a friends home....I keep you posted on the progress.

Diamond river is kind of crappy so far, btw...

Favored longan here in an area with high Asian population is Biew Kiew.

Edaw is not a popular variety here, but i think is very important commercial cultivar in Taiwan. BTW, longans are available here year around. Now with use of potassium chlorate it's very easy to stress trees into production any time of year. So farmers will use on portion of their orchard, and rotate it around, so they always have some trees fruiting.

Biew kiew, but Kohala bears better. I've heard Haew is a smaller tree that can grow well in a pot, not sure if anyone has tried this in a pot?

I am growing E Daw, See Chompoo, Kohala, Tiger's Eye, Biew Kiew, Daigelman,  a Kohala seedling that I planted and have fruited and a couple of different seedling selections from some growers in the Homestead area.  Hands down, the best longan so far that I have encountered is.........well, its too close to call.  You guys got it right.......See Chompoo or Biew Kiew or Keow...........these spellings will drive you nuts.  On a given day I might pick one slightly over the other, but either one is much better than Kohala. E Daw is supposedly the commercial cultivar in Thailand with excellent production and storage capabilities.  There are other vairieties in Thailand that are supposedly even better, but I have not tried them.

A good cultivar over here is 'Fuk Haew'. Good taste, good fruit size, good production:

BTW, I remember seing a picture of a longan in Indonesia, producing fruit not from the terminal branches, but from the trunk! I will try to find that picture...

Surely, that name must be serious source of trouble in English speaking countries...

Longans - Sri Chompoo or Biew Kiew?

Anyone have experience growing either of these trees in Florida, and can comment on the trees or their fruit?  Trying to decide which one to buy.

I have both.  They are both excellent.  I wouldn't say one is better than the other.  They are on a par. They are my two favorite longans.

Yes, yes and yes....as far as my mind will let me recall.  There are probably nuances in flavor that you might discern with a side by side tasting.  But they are just great longans. Excellently flavored and sweet.

I would again say they are on a par.  One might fruit more one year, than the other, but both are excellent producers in a good year.  This is not a good year in my yard for most anything.  So, you can't go by my yard this year.

Sri Chompoo means pink in Thai. So supposed to have a pinkish tinge to the flesh. Also supposed to have smaller seed than Biew Kiew. But Biew Kiew is probably most popular variety for sale here.

'Chompoo'

This cultivar is well sought after by the Thai people. It is a mid-maturing cultivar which flowers in December to early January and the fruits can be harvested from middle July to early August. The fruit is of medium size, oval in shape and with greenish light brown skin. Its small seed leads to high aril recovery percentage. The aril is slightly pink and thus the name 'Chompoo' meaning pink. It is very sweet (TSS of 21-22 percent) and has a pleasant aroma. The weakness of this cultivar is its irregular cropping habit as a result of poor flowering. For high production, the tree requires high fertilizer application and good management. The cultivar is normally grown in the northern provinces where the cool winter months are necessary for induction of flowering.

'Biew Khiew'

This is another well sought after cultivar. It is a late-maturing cultivar with flowering in late January and harvesting of fruits in late August to September. Mature fruit is round, large, brownish green in colour and has good aril recovery percentage. The aril is crispy, pleasant scented and sweet (TSS of 22 percent) and of excellent quality. The fruit skin is rather thick and, therefore, advantageous to longer shelf life. This cultivar exhibits irregular bearing and is susceptible to witches' broom disorder. It is normally grown in the northern provinces where the cool winter months are necessary for induction of flowering.

I have both, and both are good tasting.  For growth habits, it seems like the Biew Kiew is low and spreading, whereas the Chompoo is more upright growing.  At least for mine.
