Is this just super prevalent with passion vine or what? I had some ice plant growing at the base of my vine and after pulling the ice plant away a four inch section is flaky/rotted. Same is true on another vine that had no ground cover on it. I live in an arid climate and they don’t get overwatered :/

Okay, so perhaps I’m stubborn in trying to get a mango to grow here that was clearly unsuccessful the first time around. But to my defense I didn’t know if the first issue was user error or a product of location. The exact same issue occurred previously. A seemingly healthy, young grafted keitt is planted (this time it lasted an entire year), then at the start of summer it’s leaves start to droop, it’s branches from the growing top downward start wrinkling, and it eventually dies. Upon inspection both trees had tons of either palm roots, privet roots or jasmine roots completely intertwined in its own root ball. I have a healthy seedling growing at the base of another queen so I don’t believe it’s the queen palm.

Anyway, the jasmines are my neighbor’s, planted directly behind my mango and the privet is about 40 ft tall planted about 15 feet to its right. Here are some attached photos. Last time this happened I pulled it out and brought it inside, copper fungicide drenched it’s roots and then watched it die. What can I do to save it?

Is this too much competition and lack of water? It gets a lot of water but it’s area is never soggy.

I’m in Fresno and always looking to connect with other growers who share my same climate. Unfortunately most tropical fruit growers live in LA, San Diego or the Bay Area which have distinctly different climate than we do. As a whole, most populated areas in the valley are 9b. Sharing highs between 105-110 and lows between 25-30.

This probably won’t be a thread with a tremendous amount of users, but it’d be nice to get to know some of you guys are your experiences.

I’ve been relatively successful with mangoes, having weathered two winters and now the third summer for my Manila seedlings, Valencia pride, ice cream, ndm, and only 1 winter for keitt. Last year I found some named  banana cultivars to add to my collection. I had been growing unnamed large bananas for three years - those clumps are fruiting but I’ve yet to taste them to know if they’re worth keeping.

The named cultivars I’ve grown are dwarf ladyfinger, dwarf Mysore, ice cream, dwarf namwah, gold finger and dwarf cavendish. Gold finger and cavendish have not bounced back from winter well - both of the last years their main growing stem rotting from the inside after initially trying to push. Ladyfinger was quick to grow and is now fruiting - I would say it’s a great option (given that it’s fruit is tasty). Namwah received the least amount of cold damage.

My mangoes get casually draped with frost cloth but nothing particularly extensive. In the two winters I’ve had them all they haven’t received frost damage. I believe the lowest temps have been about 28f. Valencia pride and ice cream have both fruited.

I’ve also overwintered Barbados cherry with no protection under a queen palm for two winters. It looks like it’ll grow a lot this year. I’ve had pineapples grow and fruit, a couple have died to crown rot but most have survived.

Papaya has been my most difficult to grow. I’ve managed to overwater huge ones and it’s been heartbreaking lol. I believe I need to build up a mound of sand for them to have a chance. My soil is just too heavy (and mulched) - retains too much water. The one papaya I’ve had for two years in ground is planted close to queen palms which seem to dry out the soil.

Ive had some other cool stuff grow including June plum, monstera deliciosa. Interested in hearing the successes of other Central Valley growers!

I’ve tried getting this identified several times. If it’s too early in the fruit development please let me know. Some have guessed tall namwah or blue java. Any thoughts?

It seems they always have fruit on (which happens to be in the ends of branches) or flowers. There doesn’t seem to be that sweet window to cut back before flowers are set or fruit is harvested.

My keitt mang had some lighter than normal newly flushed leaves. They were smaller than they should have been and ultimately fell off after a weekish of hanging on. Cause for concern?

I’ll be digging it up and relocating it same day, so I won’t have the opportunity to cut and train the roots slowly. Is there any adviseable treatments to help with th rooot damage and regrowth, as well as avoiding losing foliage? I’ve eheard seaweed fertilizer is good for this, but I’m unsure. Thanks

I’ve heard of some down in Bakersfield and a couple instances in Modesto, but have yet to hear any results out of Fresno.

Hi guys. I haven’t been able to get concrete advice yet on my mango damage. Someone suggested root rot. But investigated my top inch of soil there are tons of healthy white feeder roots and no darkness in the crown. New buds have begun emerging over the past couple weeks and the oldest leaves have dropped off and some of my last set of leaves (about 2 months ago) that didn’t grow in super healthy are dropping and the remaining are getting this grey/raisin, weakening of the stem as pictured. Thanks for any and all advice

I know Jamaican cherry and moringa both produce under 2 years. Are there any others with similar, quick production?
