Tropical Fruit Discussion / What are you growing in riverside?
« on: December 25, 2020, 03:13:32 PM »
I’m moving from Fresno to riverside (on the slopes of box springs mountain by UCR) From Fresno. I’ve been able to grow healthy fruiting mango, avocado etc but I think Riverside will provide much more success.

How much large mangoes are there in riverside? The neighborhood I’ll be moving into has tons of agave attenuata, king palm, and frost sensitive euphorbia that show no winter or summer damage, so I think I’m in a nice frost free location.

Who here is in riverside? I’d love to connect once I move in!

Is this just super prevalent with passion vine or what? I had some ice plant growing at the base of my vine and after pulling the ice plant away a four inch section is flaky/rotted. Same is true on another vine that had no ground cover on it. I live in an arid climate and they don’t get overwatered :/

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tropic white guava stopped fruiting
« on: October 14, 2020, 08:02:30 PM »
I got my tropic white guava at Lowe’s as a 3g. Most of their 3g guavas are flowering in the pot, but this one didn’t flower or fruit it’s first year. It’s second year it gave me 5 fruits but didn’t flower in winter and this year it didn’t fruit spring and now no flowers in fall either.

Any idea why this isn’t fruiting? A tree that is 1.5 years younger fruited it’s first spring, fall, an absolutely massive spring crop this year and is now flowering (for comparison). Their growing conditions are the same. Any thoughts?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Second keitt mango dying in same spot
« on: May 22, 2020, 05:40:30 PM »
Okay, so perhaps I’m stubborn in trying to get a mango to grow here that was clearly unsuccessful the first time around. But to my defense I didn’t know if the first issue was user error or a product of location. The exact same issue occurred previously. A seemingly healthy, young grafted keitt is planted (this time it lasted an entire year), then at the start of summer it’s leaves start to droop, it’s branches from the growing top downward start wrinkling, and it eventually dies. Upon inspection both trees had tons of either palm roots, privet roots or jasmine roots completely intertwined in its own root ball. I have a healthy seedling growing at the base of another queen so I don’t believe it’s the queen palm.

Anyway, the jasmines are my neighbor’s, planted directly behind my mango and the privet is about 40 ft tall planted about 15 feet to its right. Here are some attached photos. Last time this happened I pulled it out and brought it inside, copper fungicide drenched it’s roots and then watched it die. What can I do to save it?

Is this too much competition and lack of water? It gets a lot of water but it’s area is never soggy.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passion fruit trunk rot
« on: May 12, 2020, 12:43:22 PM »

Some mulch fell down against my passion fruit trunk and basically had about 6” of worm castings Built up. It has no adverse effects on its appearance yet but there was some decay on the trunk as pictured. I removed as much soft bark as I could. Should I be doing anything to treat it? I figured I may buy a small seedling and inarch graft or is this something that can be self repaired?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Central Valley, ca thread
« on: May 04, 2020, 01:42:31 PM »
Hi guys,

I’m in Fresno and always looking to connect with other growers who share my same climate. Unfortunately most tropical fruit growers live in LA, San Diego or the Bay Area which have distinctly different climate than we do. As a whole, most populated areas in the valley are 9b. Sharing highs between 105-110 and lows between 25-30.

This probably won’t be a thread with a tremendous amount of users, but it’d be nice to get to know some of you guys are your experiences.

I’ve been relatively successful with mangoes, having weathered two winters and now the third summer for my Manila seedlings, Valencia pride, ice cream, ndm, and only 1 winter for keitt. Last year I found some named  banana cultivars to add to my collection. I had been growing unnamed large bananas for three years - those clumps are fruiting but I’ve yet to taste them to know if they’re worth keeping.

The named cultivars I’ve grown are dwarf ladyfinger, dwarf Mysore, ice cream, dwarf namwah, gold finger and dwarf cavendish. Gold finger and cavendish have not bounced back from winter well - both of the last years their main growing stem rotting from the inside after initially trying to push. Ladyfinger was quick to grow and is now fruiting - I would say it’s a great option (given that it’s fruit is tasty). Namwah received the least amount of cold damage.

My mangoes get casually draped with frost cloth but nothing particularly extensive. In the two winters I’ve had them all they haven’t received frost damage. I believe the lowest temps have been about 28f. Valencia pride and ice cream have both fruited.

I’ve also overwintered Barbados cherry with no protection under a queen palm for two winters. It looks like it’ll grow a lot this year. I’ve had pineapples grow and fruit, a couple have died to crown rot but most have survived.

Papaya has been my most difficult to grow. I’ve managed to overwater huge ones and it’s been heartbreaking lol. I believe I need to build up a mound of sand for them to have a chance. My soil is just too heavy (and mulched) - retains too much water. The one papaya I’ve had for two years in ground is planted close to queen palms which seem to dry out the soil.

Ive had some other cool stuff grow including June plum, monstera deliciosa. Interested in hearing the successes of other Central Valley growers!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New mango leaves are becoming damaged
« on: May 02, 2020, 07:29:53 PM »

These looked great two days ago. Some have suggested sun burn which is plausible because this is the first
Flush of the year and it’s getting hot and sunny (93 degree high so far). Some have suggested anthracnose or powder mildew.

Any thoughts?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Banana identification?!
« on: April 30, 2020, 06:25:47 PM »
I’ve tried getting this identified several times. If it’s too early in the fruit development please let me know. Some have guessed tall namwah or blue java. Any thoughts?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How to prune Valencia orange?
« on: September 23, 2019, 06:23:16 PM »
It seems they always have fruit on (which happens to be in the ends of branches) or flowers. There doesn’t seem to be that sweet window to cut back before flowers are set or fruit is harvested.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New mango leaves dropping off
« on: June 04, 2019, 11:31:28 PM »
Hi guys,

My keitt mang had some lighter than normal newly flushed leaves. They were smaller than they should have been and ultimately fell off after a weekish of hanging on. Cause for concern?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My tropical/subtropical garden in Fresno.
« on: April 25, 2019, 01:49:50 PM »
Hi guys,

For the past two years I’ve been adding tropical fruiting plants to my yard. There’s not much documentation for Central Valley exotic fruit growing, so hopefully my limited results can help or inspire some others in my climate area.

We experience 108s regularly in the summer and 28f is a typical absolute low in the winter.

I’ve learned a lot in my short time growing. I killed a couple mangoes, huge papaya that I grew from seed :(, and a white sapote last year from overwatering.

The link is an album on imgur, I’m not sure if there’s a more appropriate way to post images.

I have a jackfruit and a June plum waking up from frost damage. If anyone has an idea of what the tall, mature banana varieties are I’d love to know. I bought them on Craigslist and have no idea if they are edible. I’ve removed a handful of them and replaced them with named cultivars. Some of the smaller bananas are goldfinger, dwarf namwah, dwarf cavendish, dwarf lady finger, and dwarf Mysore. I’ve got dragon fruit crawling up my queen palms that seem to get enough protection from their canopy and residual heat to make it through winter without damage. Passion fruit have tons of flowers and fruit forming. My ice cream mango is in full bloom and the mango in the front yard is a Valencia pride, also blooming with fruitlets. My avocado is mexicola, shaded from afternoon sun by my banana stand.

Tropic white guava is against my home and under an eve. Keitt mango and Hass avocado are against the concrete west facing wall, closely sheltered by my house opposite of it. I’ve got a Jamaican cherry flushing in the front yard. Capulin cherry with fruitlets also against my west facing wall.

Please ask if you have any questions on what plants I’ve posted or care I’ve put into them. The layout of posting an album make it difficult to post a description for each photo, but I did just want to document this for future reference. Thanks!

I’ll be digging it up and relocating it same day, so I won’t have the opportunity to cut and train the roots slowly. Is there any adviseable treatments to help with th rooot damage and regrowth, as well as avoiding losing foliage? I’ve eheard seaweed fertilizer is good for this, but I’m unsure. Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Temperature difference under patio?

How much warmer is it under a southern facing patio than in open air? If temps get to 29, would the patio be safe to have potted mango, Jamaican cherry? Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Starfruit leaves curled backwards
« on: November 16, 2018, 03:01:03 PM »
Leaves have been backwards like this for a couple months now, looks much different than the typically open look that I see others have. This started before temps got colder. Lows have been at about 40

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango leaf damage. Cause for concern?
« on: October 22, 2018, 06:21:17 PM »
Hi guys. I haven’t been able to get concrete advice yet on my mango damage. Someone suggested root rot. But investigated my top inch of soil there are tons of healthy white feeder roots and no darkness in the crown. New buds have begun emerging over the past couple weeks and the oldest leaves have dropped off and some of my last set of leaves (about 2 months ago) that didn’t grow in super healthy are dropping and the remaining are getting this grey/raisin, weakening of the stem as pictured. Thanks for any and all advice
