Temperate Fruit Discussion / How true are grapes from seed?
« on: March 23, 2016, 08:10:27 PM »
I threw some concord and a white variety into a large pot and they sprouted. Has anyone tried growing them from seed with success? And how true to type are they?/ How many years to fruit?

Has anyone ordered from here? Do they ship to the U.S.? How does shipping go? Not much info on their site. I would have emailed them but could not find an address. I posted this on the buy/sell/trade's "where to buy seeds and plants" thread with no answers.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jaboticaba grafting compatibility?
« on: March 05, 2016, 02:56:25 PM »
How does compatibility go with these? Does one only graft onto rootstock of the same species? Or are there certain species that can be grafted onto with another species?- Thanks in advance!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Update on seedlings

Excited to post some recent photos of my seedlings. I keep the humidity up by covering them with plastic bottles and keep the warmth in with a heating pad under them. Most seeds were purchased last autumn.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Recurring Annona Problem
« on: February 16, 2016, 11:51:21 PM »
My Annona seedlings grow fine up to about a year. The new growth at the top will wither due to cold weather etc. and I bring it inside and the mature leaves perk back up, but all of the leaves drop a day or two later and the tree randomly ends up dying. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?! This killed my sugar Apple seedlings as well as my rollinia seedlings. Now it's out to get my custard apple seedling.
Thanks for any help!

I found a listing for several seeds on EBay for a nice price from a Hawaiian seller. They were collected in August of 2015. Does anyone know of how long they stay viable? Should I buy them?

I am interested in purchasing a few banana plants once the weather warms up. What are some flavorful varieties that will stay under 12 ft?

I was planning on ordering from him this spring but realized he doesn't ship outside of PR. Does this only apply to buying trees?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Will my custard apple tree be ok?
« on: January 18, 2016, 03:46:33 PM »
Its been in the single digits in Cincy lately and the space heaters in my greenhouse are struggling to keep all of the plants warm. My 10 month old custard apple seedling is a bit droopy from temps that went as low as the high 40s/low 50s. Will it be ok? Its now about 70 degrees. Is there anything I can do?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Why does this happen to my Annonas?
« on: January 16, 2016, 03:04:21 PM »
I have attempted to grow both sugar apple and rollinia from seed with luck for only a temporary amount of time. The seedling would grow well for about 6 months and would at one point become chlorotic and develop brown/black tips and spots. I would remove these leaves and later, the tree's new growth refused to form and it lost its leaves and died! I don't know what I'm doing wrong or what disease it could be. I use organic potting soil and fertilize monthly.

I just bought some Blue Lilly Pilly seeds from Tradwinds fruit. I want to know of some other bush foods worth adding to my collection. I am interested in the eating quality more than the fruit as an ornamental.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Did I kill this? Will it grow back?
« on: October 16, 2015, 02:05:21 PM »
I did something stupid.. I was checking on the growth of my lemon mangosteen seed. (I know I should have waited for it to sprout up.) It has roots, but I think I snapped the tiny start of a stem. (The red part). Will it grow back? Or did I kill it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona ID please
« on: August 13, 2015, 04:31:27 PM »
I think I may have accidentally mislabeled one of my Annona trees. I labeled it as sugar apple, but the leaves are oddly glossy compared to my other sugar apple seedling leaves, which are matte. I know if it is wrong it is either A. reticulata, or A. muricata. The mystery tree also has longer/narrower leaves.

Suspected A. reticulate shiny leaf.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Why is my rollinia losing it's leaves?!
« on: August 13, 2015, 04:23:30 PM »
Two weeks ago a saw that my rollinia tree's new leafs would not develop and were turning brown. A week ago, I noticed that the tips of my rollinia leaves were turning black and developing brown spots! The leaves other wise were completely green, but falling! Late in the day I treated it with soapy water in case it had mites.
Now it has lost all of its leaves but the stem is still green but with small dark spots. What is this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Shoud I repot my rollinia?
« on: July 28, 2015, 08:56:41 PM »
So have my rollinia seedling that is about 7 in tall in a container that is about 5 in wide by 7 in tall. I have a container that is 12 in tall by about 12 in wide. Should I repot it in this container? Or should I wait for it to get taller? If I wait, about how tall should it be?

I will be vacationing in Miami soon and was wondering what plants grow well from cuttings. I want to bring back some cool stuff I don't have yet. Also, is there any way to keep seeds that loose viability quickly fresh if I'm traveling by plane? Should I just mail them back before I leave? Or is okay to store them regularly?

71
I'm going to Miami this month and was wondering if I'd need a permit or anything to bring back seeds. Are there any limits to how much I can take with me? I do know that you can't take noxious weeds and endangered species. Also, are permits free? I'm a broke teen so I have no money lol. It would be great if I could get some simple guidelines and not have to read the whole rule page.- Thanks

Hi, I will be visiting Miami in the beginning of July. I'm already going to the Fruit and Spice Park but want to know of some other good places to go to featuring tropical fruits. I will be flying there and also was wondering about rules on bringing seeds back by plane if I live in Ohio. I don't know much about restrictions on that.- Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / WHAT IS THIS?!
« on: June 13, 2015, 04:58:29 PM »
I left for six days to go to a youth camp and the day I came back I noticed an odd growth on the soil of my kiwano melon, rollinia, and summer squash. I used Scotts Hyponex soil and possibly a cheap soil for them. It looks like some sort of fungus. I've used the same soils before on other plants but no growth occurred on them. Could anyone ID this or tell me if it is harmful or not? It hasn't harmed anything so far. On the rollinia, I covered it up with more soil, just to see if it would pop up through the soil. I cant see any harm on the leaves.
Here's a photo. It kind of looks like cooked lentils.

I started growing P. edulis from seed a little over a year ago. I got the seeds fresh from a grocery store fruit I purchased. There are many factors that contribute to how true a seedling is from its parent plant. Is there any chance of it fruiting? Also, how long might it take? Many sites on Passiflora say they are always grown from seed, but other sites say blooming may never occur. ???
Another question I have is what are some good Passiflora varieties to grow from seed? I purchased seeds of P. mollissima, P. maliformis, and P. laurifolia from Tradewinds. The germination rates on P. mollissima were great. But P. laurifolia only has one sprout so far and P. maliformis has none.

above: Seed grown P. edulis at about 7 ft. tall.
below: P. mollissima seedling at about 2.5 months.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Odd Growth on Dragon Fruit Plant
« on: May 02, 2015, 04:46:03 PM »
Lately, I have noticed an odd rusty looking growth on my two year old dragon fruit cactus. It sits near a palm tree that has sorta similar looking spots. Could the spots from the palm spread to the cactus If it came in contact with it? I don't have a great photo of the spots on the palm. (It's a bit blurry.)
Also, I have been spraying all of my plants with a solution of water and dish soap up before this had popped up to keep the bugs off. Any suggestions?
