Maprang/marian plum, worth growing for fruit
« on: September 28, 2019, 12:20:38 AM »
This is the other tree I have had trouble growing.  To me, the fruit loom delicious but I keep managing to kill them.  I have had good success germinating seeds, but, not much luck keeping them alive.  Has anyone tried this fruit and know if it is worth the trouble?

I have two growing but they are only 3-4 leaf seedlings. However, you might try the tall pots specifically designed for growing trees when dealing with precious or hard to grow tap rooted species. I've been doing this and with a very well draining mix have had no losses. I put in a fairly large percentage of biochar/natural charred wood.

I received a ~6" seedling a few months ago and it has been growing steadily despite its new growth being burnt once when my greenhouse ventilation failed.

I have a question, then I have heard there are some, sweet/sour and sweet variety fruit.  Which one is considered best?

How does maprang compare to something like m. kasturi?

What is it graft compatible with?

I would prefer a Maprang over Kasturi. Better flavor, less fiber, more juice. I'm growing both, though, still young but I've tried several of both.

Kasturi tastes very similar to mango. Maprang has its own unique taste, kind of like a mango/plum cross. Maprang is graft compatible with mango, or so i heard from a Thai friend, but is much easier to graft onto maprang rootstock.

Mayong chid is the best.

But a mango is much better.

The few people who have maprang here feel that the root stock is not very vigorous.  I might try grafting it onto mango. The fruit is good.
