I've got stewart, bacon and fuerte fruit now.  Hass are probably ready also, just need to sample one first.  Coming soon will be sir prize, pinkerton, hass, sharwil, reed, ardith, lamb.

Depending on the size of the fruit about 8-12 fruits fit in a box.  Some of the bacons are pretty large.  Can mix and match fruit.  You tell me what you want and I will pick fruit everyday for a week and put the type and date on them so they don't all ripen at once.

24$ total with postage inside California (weighed mail)
26$ total with postage outside California  (flat rate box).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Concrete dragonfruit post
« on: January 13, 2020, 12:09:28 AM »
Just made a form this weekend and poured one.  I will update the thread in a week or 2 when I get the form done for the top supports.

The form is made of plywood and 4x6 lumbers.  Trimmed down slightly to make 5x5 post and a smaller spot on top to set a support onto.  Motor oil was brushed inside the form to keep the concrete from sticking.  I already have a harbor freight cement mixer for doing small jobs here.  Makes a few hundred pounds of mix super easy.

We use crushed recycled concrete 20$ per ton.  Mixed 5:1 with portland cement.  9$ for 95lbs of portland.  Can make posts for around 3$ a piece.  Using old 1" well pipes I had laying around for structural support.  They are stronger than rebar and galvanized.

These are going to be very cheap to make and will last a very long time.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Clover cover crop?
« on: January 06, 2020, 09:26:39 PM »
Anyone use this in their groves?  Im trying to figure out ways to smother out weeds and also provide free nitrogen. This is the patented variety That seems to be best since it only gets 4-6" tall.  Let me know if theres something better in your opinion or if this is a waste of time and money.  Keep in mind this will be in a very hot dry area of CA with sandy soil.  Weeds still grow between trees here and Im looking to have this replace them.  What do you guys and gals think?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / CA PSA Pharaoh moth on cherimoyas.
« on: November 13, 2019, 12:44:39 PM »
Found a bunch of giant catapillars on my cherimoya trees.  The biggest ones Ive ever seen, as big as a hot dog.  They do a lot of damage quick.  Check your trees, they will strip them fast.  I pulled a bunch off last night and am going to do a light sray of BT today.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Santa Anas
« on: October 25, 2019, 01:22:48 PM »
I thought we made it through this year and were in the clear.  Everything has been going well in the garden until yesterday.  We got hit really hard with the dry wind last night.  Lots of broken plants, trees fallen over, shades and pots and trash cans etc thrown around.  The yard is a real mess and many plants are destroyed.  I havent even gone to look at the orchard yet.  Just looking at the plants closest to the house its not pretty.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Canistel pruning
« on: October 17, 2019, 11:05:03 AM »
Do you guys prune the leader or just let it go?  My tree is going straight up like a christmas tree.  Is it ok to let it grow how it wants and not prune or better to remove the leader?  I prefer to have a column shape tree unless theres a reason not to.

This one is in the ground and never been pruned.

This one is a ross I just got, same thing, growing straight up.  Will probably flop over once the stake is removed.  Should I prune it in half or just let it go?

Was at walter andersens in Poway today and they had about 50 nice looking sharwil avocado trees from la verne nursery.   Would have got one if I didnt already have this one.  Didnt check the price maybe 40 if they are charging the same as other la verne trees.  They will probably sell quick.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Purple passionfruut comparison
« on: September 13, 2019, 07:05:47 PM »
Left to right purple possum, fredrick, red rover.

Flavor wise the purple possum and fredrick are both good and very similar.  Red rover has more of a unique flavor than them and tastes better to me and my wife.

Fredrick has the thinnest shell and gets damaged easier from the sun after dropping off the plant.  Purple possum also damages from sunburn after falling off.  Red rover has the thickest shell and will take more sun before being damaged.

Overall red rover to me tastes better and also is able to sit on the ground for several hours before being damaged by the sun.  It seems like the best ones although they maybe have less edible flesh per fruit.

All 3 types grow like weeds and produce heavily.
