Citrus General Discussion / Sunburn????????
« on: April 27, 2017, 03:04:15 PM »
I recently put my potted 5 year old flame grapefruit in the ground! As much as this tree loves sun and with so much root, I thought it would absolutely take off!! SURPRISINGLY, it seems to be getting sunburned!! Very odd since a naval and page planted at same time, also from pots, are thriving!!

Should I put a shade cloth on it or just leave it be until it acclimates?

Temps haven't been horrible... 95 for a couple days but mostly mid to high 80s.

Citrus General Discussion / HELP - it's go time!!
« on: April 06, 2017, 02:04:14 PM »
My bud wood has finally arrived!!!!! Wooo-hooo!!

I am going to bud to the rootstock where my kumquat used to be grafted. I hope bark still slips on such old rootstock. I'm supposed to bend the original growth to encourage bud to grow but there's very little growth. Should I just proceed as normal and worry about that in 21 days?

Finally, how long can I keep budwood? Should I store in fridge? Right now it's wrapped in a wet paper towel.

Thank u!!!

Citrus General Discussion / In-ground Fertilizer
« on: April 05, 2017, 05:30:31 PM »
I have always had all of my citrus trees in containers and use Jack's 5-1-3 ratio.. I recently planted a Flame grapefruit, Washington Naval, Page Mandarin and unknown mandarin grown from seed in the ground.

Since I have never had them in the ground before, I was wondering what was the best ration for in-ground fertilizer? My local Home Depot sells 3 different brands.

Thank you,

Citrus General Discussion / Page Mandarin issues
« on: March 13, 2017, 04:03:28 PM »
Hello,

Wondering what is going on with my page mandarin.. This is old growth from last year and I'm hoping this year's flush doesn't come out the same. One of these shoots is also way taller than the rest.

Also, wondering if I can put the page in the ground also in zone 8b? I read on a previous thread that after kumquats and satsumas, they are the most tolerant.

Thank you,

Cold Hardy Citrus / Planting potted citrus in the ground
« on: February 27, 2017, 05:08:52 PM »
Afternoon,

I recently moved into what should be a forever home and haven't re-built my greenhouse, so I want to put some of my pots in the ground! Since i have had them for 5 years and am quite attached to them, i wanted to get the expertise of people on this forum to make sure I can and should plant them in the ground.

I live between zone 8A/8B even though it's officially listed as a zone 8B. Half of the house is planted on sandy type soil with very fast draining soil which i think would be great for my trees.

I have 3 that I'm officially putting in the ground:

Washington Navel (C-35 rootstock)
Nagami kumquat (if it survives the winter - twigs still dying back)
unknown cutie that i grew from seed. Still not flowering and since they are hybrid, not sure what type of fruit I'll get.

I have two that are staying in pots for sure:

Mexican lime
Meyer Lemon

Unsure:

Ruby Red Grapefruit (like fruit when it's been on tree long time and we get cold nights in October so I'm concerned I'll have to harvest early and fruit will be really sour)
Page Mandarin
Gold nugget mandarin
Old Spice
Sanguinelle blood orange
cara cara

Citrus General Discussion / Caring for Nagami suffering WLD
« on: February 21, 2017, 05:21:50 PM »
Hello,

I have a Nagami kumquat that is suffering from what i believe is WLD. It's surprising because it's my only tree suffering this winter and they supposedly tolerate more cold than most of my other varieties (including lemon). I moved homes and did not install my greenhouse this winter so i have them in the garage and i take them out daily when the day is nice. Right now, we are getting beautiful days in the mid 70s but at night I still put them in my garage since temps reach high 30's/low 40s. All my trees are flushing and most have flowers, except the Nagami!! It still has leaves but i am having several drop and now the twigs are dying back as well.

I'm still taking it out and letting the sun hit the pot while i shade the leaves. Is that the correct course of action or should I be doing something different. This year I was planning on putting it in the ground since i moved into a forever home; I live in zone 8.

thanks,

Citrus General Discussion / Xie Shan
« on: May 17, 2016, 06:26:52 PM »
Hello,

My unsuccessful 5 year quest to obtain a Xie Shan tree continues... I live in AZ and can't have trees shipped to me but was wondering if anyone had any seeds available. I heard seeds are not common in the fruit, but no harm in asking.

Thank you

Citrus General Discussion / Sunburn??
« on: June 29, 2015, 11:32:52 AM »
We had a heat wave a week or two ago where we got unusually high temps as high as 106-108 degrees. I am seeing what looks like sunburn on my Ruby Red Grapefruit. I am surprised because I know that grapefruit LOVES heat; the tree is in full sun in the morning, but gets full shade after 1 pm.

I have attached some pictures that show the yellowing. Could this actually be sunburn or am i burning it with my new fertilizing system?

Thanks,

Robert

Citrus General Discussion / Fertilizing Ratios
« on: June 03, 2015, 04:39:16 PM »
Hello,

I just purchased an injector so i can fertilize my citrus with each watering. I am a little concerned because this is my first injector and i want to make sure i don't burn my trees! The injector I purchased is the EZ-FLO 2 gallon drip system. I am using Jack's Professional 25-5-15 high performance.

I am running the injector at 100:1

Mixing ratios for fertilizer:
1:100 (1%) setting    E.C.
100 ppm    =    5.4 oz.    0.57
200 ppm    =    10.8 oz.    1.14
300 ppm    =    16.2 oz.    1.71

Since this is a 2 gallon receptacle, I am mixing in 27 oz of fertilizer to make it 250 ppm. That seems like a ton of fertilizer!!!

I am building up the courage to finally turn it on! Any feedback would give me peace of mind and would be greatly appreciated!

Robert

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Feijoa Pineapple Guava
« on: April 11, 2015, 12:32:07 PM »
Hello,

I'm curious if anyone had any thoughts as to what is wrong with my Feijoa Pineapple Guava? No new growth, color very light and many leaves are starting to look like they are about to fall off. The temps here are barely warming up, so i am not panicking, but something def looks wrong. My feijoa's in pots are a deep green and full of growth already. The interesting thing is that I had a Washington Naval orange tree planted where Feijoa is now that looked unhealthy, just like the Feijoa! I took it out, put it in a pot and now it's doing great.

I fertilized yesterday and the fertilizer has micro-nutrients; I'm hoping that helps!!!

Citrus General Discussion / 2-n-1 kumquat
« on: November 26, 2014, 04:55:36 PM »
I have a meiwa/nagami 2 in 1 tree and one of the two has taken off, while the other is slowing dying! Any thoughts as to why this may be happening and what I can do to save it?

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dwarf Carica Papaya
« on: August 06, 2014, 12:33:56 PM »
Good morning,

Was wondering if anyone could let me know if I would be able to grow a papaya in the Southern AZ heat? I live in Tubac, AZ - zone 8 and want to grow one in a container. I have a shade house in the summer and convert it to a greenhouse in the winter.

Thanks,

Citrus General Discussion / Allspice
« on: July 02, 2014, 06:37:25 PM »
Anyone familiar with a variety called Allspice? Supposedly the fruit has a spicy aftertaste. I was intrigued by it and I purchased a very small tree from RSI Growers. It flushed all winter in my greenhouse and I can't wait until I get fruit.
