Passion Fruit Question
« on: June 30, 2017, 12:09:47 PM »
My passion fruit vines are flowering nicely but keep dropping the fruit prematurely, or at least I think so.  It is a purple variety.  They seem to fall off when they start to shade purple just a tad, but are only abut the size of a golf ball. The purple I buy in the store are more like the size of a tennis ball.  Do I have a different, smaller variety or am I missing something?  Thanks.

My purple passionfruit does exactly the same thing.  Nice amount of juice in the fruits, but they are small.  Is yours Purple Possum?

I'm not sure on the variety. But it is a purple variety. And yes, same thing...good amount of juice for its size, but small.

i have a Purple Possum.
it grew 2 years and got really large, but never fruited.
i took cuttings and planted it in another spot
now, it (the new plant) is on its 3rd year. i see a flower here and there
and never any fruit.

i just got a P Incarnata (Maypop) and it was making flowers at 8 inches tall.
i have it climbing my fence now.
the smell of Incarnatas flowers is intoxicating... seriously.

i also got 2 Edulis this year
one from seed, and one Lilikoi from cutting
hoping these 2 will fruit and i can graft my Purple Possum.

can you graft Passiflora ?
can i graft my incarnata to my P possum ?

I pick Panama Red as soon as a little bit of red starts to show; so the squirrels don't beat me to it. It ripens more on the counter after a few days or so.

To get any kind of fruit to set I cross pollinate all the varieties I have.
It's the only way I've been able to get Ruby Glow to set any fruit
I hand pollinated the Ruby Glow with pollen from the Frederick and the Purple Incarnata flowers.

Greenman62, interesting question.  I have no idea if Passiflora can be grafted or not.  I usually just start new plants from cuttings or seeds.  If you try grafting them please let us know how it turns out.

Please help me to identify the type of this passion fruit. I bought it from seller who assures me that it is Giant passion fruit(or Passiflora quadrangularis) but from what I could find the leafs are different.
I will be ok with loosing my money but I don't want to waste time in case if it's not even passion fruit(even if this is not Giant but some another passion it's ok but I want to be sure)

yes they can be grafted ,just have to be compatible with one another...I have grafted purple edulis on caerulea which are growing well, potted .

I am totally with you on the scent of maypop flowers. It’s amazing!

Maypop is very precocious- it will set fruit its first year from seed.

I don’t know why you couldn’t graft if you wanted to.
