Horrible Birula harvest this year. I tried to hand pollinate in October none set. The drought hasn't helped but if I would've HP in July I wouldn't be bitching.

Very nice! Does Saijo have any significant taste difference compared to hachiya?

Here Is the best West Indian avocado you've ever tasted:
Ismael 1
It's creamy sweet it ripes perfectly even and easy to peel. If it was nutty it would beat Hass , Reed and Kona hands down

Hey Bob
Big Red flowered in one year from seed. Fruited the second year and this year it held 12 fruits. I'm trying to keep it at 8-9' sugar apples are the slowest growing anonas in socal.

Curious, any of you SoCal growing rollinia?  I've got 3 seedlings going from some giant Kona fruit.

It's very good Mark. This variety is from Oct to early January quiet a difference when grafted. In the mother tree it ripens from December to March. You should give this a try if you like WI race much better than Catalina and infinitely better than the ones we receive from Miami in winter: croquette and Monroe

Mark, that is a nice size Rollinia fruit! I have a 15 gallon Rollinia, but I am not sure what variety it is.  Perhaps when it fruits I will have a chance to figure this out. A few nurseries in southern California have these, but I am surprised more people don't grow it.  I have heard they don't fruit much outside of tropical areas, so that may be a reason.

Rollinas grow as vigorous as any anona in SoCal the problem is they don't like our arid climate. I'm now experimenting with a special variety and rootstock hopefully this will correct the problem so far things are looking promising

Good to know this Frank.  You and others have made great strides in demonstrating that we can grow/fruit Ilama in southern California by choosing the best rootstock and varieties.  This was something I would have thought impossible.  Sounds like you are on the right track to getting us closer to the same results for Rollinia.  Keep us updated on the progress!  Sorry for this detour of the original thread topic.

This west indian avocado is matching well with all the great California winter cados......Sir Prize, Fuerte, Pinkerton.  Ismael is the absolute best west indian avocado I've ever had and it gets better the longer it hangs on the tree

It looks like Ismael 1 and Mantequilla might be choice avoacados for South Florida.  It seems that Carlos was experimenting with Ismael 1 (Is it one and the same?), but he stopped reporting on it.  Do you think anyone else around here has it?

Carlos report was vague. I'm not sure which one he fruit I believe it was Ismael 2. He claims it ripened uneven and that it was watery which are contrary to our experience in California. He claims he terminated his trial so I assume he's no longer growing it. I'll have scions in March of both avocados(mantequilla & Ismael)
