Ice cream bean identification assistant please
« on: December 06, 2013, 01:53:12 PM »
I recently acquire two beans and not sure which inga's they are.

I initially thought the the big one was inga edulis so I wrote it on the bean, but I might be wrong.

I saw those 2 in the markets yesterday and several members identified them last year but now I don't recall. They are not I.edulis which looks like this.

That's a huge pod. Is it spectabilis?  What does the seed look like?

Yeah it's huge!  You can knock some one out with it. If you ever held a boomerang, that's how it feels like but only thicker.

Shaped like a ninja shoes.

As Mike already pointed out, neither of those are I. edulis. The bottom one is probably I. spectabilis, also called machete ice cream bean because of the shape. The top one could be the same species, just a smaller pod. Hard to ID ingas just from the pods as there are many look alikes. Really for positive ID you need photos of flowers and foliage also.
