Grafting Mango Opinions
« on: June 06, 2020, 09:48:31 PM »
I just picked up a Manila seedling with two similar sized branches branching off about 10 inches above the soil.

Would you graft two scions, or just one?

Same cultivar or different?

Are you going to plant it in the ground? Do you have room for more mangos
or limited space? These are questions you have to ask yourself. I have room and
rather not have cocktail trees.

I have room for about ten more trees, but I have 20+ candidates. ;D ;D ;D

So I could go either way... I'm just curious what others would do.

Would you graft two scions of the same cultivar, then?

Seems like an opportunity to graft 2 varieties :)

Do you already have the 20+ varieties on hand? How about if you plant 10 trees and graft 2 varieties per tree? That would be an amazing assortment. Or if you want to keep things simpler, could you narrow the candidates down to your top 10?

By the way, how far apart will you plant your trees?

I don't have the scions yet, I've just been picking up rootstocks as I can find them.  I'm hoping to learn to graft here too, pretty soon.

Given that they grow so slowly here, I've been planting them 6' to 8' apart.

If I keep that spacing, I can put in 12 more trees.

Unless the kids let me take down their trampoline!  ;D ;D ;D

Looks like a perfect seedling to graft 2 cultivars. Here is my grafted Sweet Tart and Dwarf Hawaiian currently loaded with fruits. Seedling was in a 5 gal pot and grafted in May 2018.

The main reason I'm hesitating, is that I hear it's difficult to keep multiple-graft mango trees balanced...

Does anyone have a more mature multi-graft tree that's productive?

Alternatively,

Does it ever make sense to graft the same cultivar to a young tree multiple times?
