:o
I’ve bought many jackfruits I’ve the years. They of course can have a strong fruity, some would say “jungle,” aroma.
Today I bought one that smelled nice aNd mildly fruity In the store.
A few hours later, it now seems to have a gasoline-like undertone if I give it a sniff.
I’ve never smelled that in a jackfruit before. Should I be concerned?

It’s a goner.
Took it back for a refund just now.
I have a high tolerance for jungle aromas but this was too much.

I love that gasoline smell in Jackfruit, sooo dank. :o
I believe what you are smelling are the Volatile Sulphur Compounds in Jackfruit, three of which I know have been identified:
3-(methylthio)-propanal (methional)
2-hydroxyethyl methyl sulfide
3-(methylthio)-hexanol

Funny you mentioned marang. I have had a Marang right off the tree, and somewhere in my memory banks I made the connection to this gasoline smell. Definitely very pungent.
I could’ve cut it open and given it a taste test but if it was nasty, it would’ve been much more of a production to return it to the grocery store LOL
I just have never had quite that specific aroma in a jackfruit, so it spooked me a bit. Like I said, I love the wild smells but this one seemed “off”

Some of the best Jackfruit I've tasted, smelled like you were huffing gasoline
