Giant Cherimoyas
« on: January 08, 2019, 07:51:19 PM »
I just found this giant Cherimoya under my tree. I put it on the scale and it weighed 2 lbs. 5 Oz. I know there are much bigger Cherimoyas out there but this is a pretty big fruit considering how much fruit I let my tree hold this year and the last couple years.

You get a better idea of how big it is with the jumbo chicken egg next to it.

I looked around the tree and found several other big Moyas in the 1.5-2.5lbs range.

Great job! What variety is this? I heard Big Sister gives big fruits when tree matures so I bought one. Have not planted into ground yet.

I bought some giant cherimoyas variety of seed from Raulglezruiz.  I think he said 3kilo is the size of the fruit. We'll see in a few years if the seedling will produce 3kilo fruit.

Thanks for the replies everyone. This fruit came from my big multigraft tree and it fell off the tree before I could trace it back to the tag so I’ll have to wait till I cut it open to see if I can determine the variety. Most the larger fruit left on the tree is Dr White. My Dr White are kinda weird because sometimes they have strong protrusions and sometimes they’re flat. I just traced back the remaining giant fruit left hanging on my tree and the majority of them are confirmed Dr. white.

Hey Mikey, I used to grow the hottest chili peppers in the world but every year or two, they develop a new variety. My palate can’t handle the super spicy chili peppers anymore and I only grow a few of the less spicy varieties now.

Dr White is a great tasting large fruited Cherimoya that can get to 3-4 lbs. Cumbe is another variety that can get huge.

Kim, let me know if you have a scion or two that you want to sell me from Raul’s seedlings. I’m sure that I can get them to fruit early if I graft it onto my mature tree.

I’ll let everyone know how it tastes once it’s ripe.

Similarly, I got a 2 lbs 4 oz Pierce from Peter last year. Excellent taste as usual.

I woke up this morning and found another large Cherimoya on the ground. This weighed in at 2 lbs 3/8 Oz. I really should have harvested these before they drop but I’m trying to extend my harvest. They get scratches as they fall, especially the larger ones. My leaf litter beneath the canopy cushions the drop but when fruit drops off the tree, it leaves a hole where the stem pulled out which can cause fungal issues if not careful.

Anyways, here are some pictures.

Last picture is the three fruit ripening in the counter

It’s about 9-10 feet tall and just as wide. It’s fully mature now and grows a lot during the warmer months. I recently trimmed back some of the longer branches otherwise it will be even taller.

But are they actually cherimoya, or annona squamosa or atemoya?

Hey Simon,

They are the biggest fruits I ever seen. Great job.

My experience is that cherimoya should be pick before dropped to avoid water-down taste of over-ripe (not softwise but chemical changed). A perfectly timed fruit has paper white meat and a late fruit has an off-white color meat with lacking flavor. Is this true for you guys too?

All the fruit I have been eating from my trees have been excellent tasting and not watered down, this includes all my drops. The flavor and the sweetness, to a great extent, is variety specific although fertilization and watering is also a key component.

If you have a sweet variety, let’s say Pierce for example, and it is not sweet. It could be due to lack of maturity of the tree, too high a fruit to leaf ratio, not getting full sunlight, improper fertilization and perhaps the number one culprit of watered down sugars and flavor is over watering.

Simon

What a good looking cherimoya you have. How prolific is Dr. White? I am debating whether to get a Dr. White or a Big Sister. Mimosa Nursery in LA has Dr. White trees that already have flowers for only $40/ 5 gallon. But Big Sister is only available at Bonita Creeks and the price tag is pretty steep for me.

I like Dr White a lot but it’s one of those varieties that took slightly longer to establish before it bore fruit. Once mature, Dr White produces lots of flowers and the number of fruit really depends on how much I hand pollinate and how much I thin. It can set a bunch of fruit if I let it.

As for preference between the two varieties, that’s a personal preference thing. I haven’t had Big sister for a couple years and last time I had Dr White and Big Sister together at a Cherimoya tasting event, I liked Dr White more although Big Sister seemed off that day.
