Fourwinds Growers is a good place to purchase dwarf citrus trees.  Kumquats have sour pulp and sweet rinds.  You eat the entire kumquat peel and all. - Millet

I have three, they taste just like the seeded variety and have been easy to grow.  Definitely recommend these if you like kumquats.

EDIT not sure about bonsai potential, and I don't recall flowering pattern...

I'd recommend a Meiwa over a Nagami.  Nagamis are generally pretty sour.

Nordmann Seedless Nagami Kumquat bloom on the new wood, so pruning to achieve Bonsai structure will eliminate most all flowers. , at least on the stems that were pruned. - Millet

Hong Kong Kumquat might be a good bonsai.  It has smaller fruit and I think smaller leaves, and I believe is normally just grown from seed.  I found a tiny one at a local store but it hasn't bloomed yet so I don't have any seeds.

I agree with Brian that the Hong Kong kumquat would be a good variety to bonsai. Another good citrus variety to bonsai would be a procimquat. The fruit is tiny, about one-half the size of the Hong Kong's fruit,  the leaves are small and the tree frequently fruits from seed in the very first year.  Swimmingfree, if you want to stick to an actual kumquat the nordsman's fruit is oblong as is the nagami, the meiwa's fruit is round. Both are approximately the same size.  Lastly, I think a  Myrtifolia orange, a dwarfish tree with thornless branches and small, very closely set leaves, would also be a perfect tree to bonsai. - Millet

Last thing... maybe a calomondin.   They look similar, perfect round fruit, supposedly easy to grow, compact, and I've found them at big-box stores in summer.   I think they taste great, too, but I doubt you'll find many others who agree.

When kumquats are grown from seed they are of course growing on their own rootstock.  Kumquats do not do well when growing on their own rootstock.  Further kumquats on their own roots stock generally have a short life period. - Millet

When citrus trees are grown in lava rock (scoria) they have problems with iron deficiency.  You will need to supply additional iron.  Even then it is difficult.  I once had a tree in 100% scoria, and never could get good growth no matter what I did. - Millet

Millet l not just lava rock im using a mix with lava rock compost potting soil and what look like cat litter is a fired clay ...   the  lava rock is to help make the roots split like the superoot pots do ...when the root hit the  lava rock it gets trap in the rock and make it split and help keep the roots fine ...   as for my citrus trees i have are staying in they big pots ....   i will be trying air rotting by key lime next year to do a bonsai with ...the art of bonsai is to make a tree that grows slow and look old ...  its a fine dance between life and death you have to do ....  i will never have all my citrus in bonsai ...   i like them to munch to do that with i have some  fd seedling that i will try it with  but not with all them eather...  that why im looking for some thing to bonsai if i got a Kumquat tree i wood take a cutting to bonsai...

Here is my in ground nordman. Hopefully I'll get a few fruit this year. Never got much fruit when it was in a pot. Had a mature changshou kumquat
tree at my old house(now cut down) and made lots of tasty marmalade with the fruit. With the nordman I won't have to worry about seeds...Lots
of blooms for the start of the second year in the ground. Got the budwood from CCPP.

i went to a store that sell bonsai and prebonsai  i fond a Kumquat tree not in good shape ...it was in bad soil ( not bonsai ) and water ones or twice a day and it has root rot (i think ) the tree had lots of yellow on the new growth... first thing i did was  clean off the old soil and put in the the same pot.....   with new potting soil  and some bonsai soil....  its from a cutting or air layering by the way the roots are on it..  the one good thing it was cheep less then 20 and no shipping but i dont no what kind of Kumquat it is...
