Citrus General Discussion / How to promote growth in lower branches?
« on: July 23, 2020, 08:18:07 AM »
I just bought a 3 gallon sour orange tree instead of the 1 gallon tree size that I usually buy online. All my other trees that I've had for a few years have short trunks and are shaped similar to a bush. The trunk of my new tree is tall and all the leaves have been pruned except for those at the top. Is there a way to promote growth lower in the tree so it begins to look more like a bush?

Also, do you think it has a serious pest issue?

Citrus General Discussion / Question abiout pruning
« on: March 14, 2017, 11:20:27 AM »
I can't recall the specific posts, but I've read here on several occasions that trees store nutrients and energy in there limbs and that trees will reabsorb these nutrients into other parts of the tree before letting a branch die due to various reasons such as lack of light. I intend to prune several branches from a small potted tree, but I'd like to know if there is a way of safely cause the tree to send the nutrients to other areas before I chop off a branch. Could I just cover the branches I intend to remove with foil to remove light? Has anyone done this before?

Thanks Tom. I plan to get a few new trees this fall. I'll see how they do Lechuza PON. They'll be inside under a MH light over the winter and outside in the spring. It should be a good test. I'll repot my other trees in it if the new ones do well.

Thanks for the reply Millet. It would be great if I could use Miracle Grow Garden Soil, but my trees are inside for most of the year, and since I live in a condo, I don't have anywhere to store or dispose dirt. How often do you mean by VERY frequently for watering in the summer with Lechuza PON? Every two days, every day or twice a day?

Do you know of any other inorganic plant substrates that are available in the U.S.? I'm aware of Volkasol and Volkaflor , but I believe there only available in Europe.

Citrus General Discussion / Lechuza PON

I'm looking for a growing media that I don't have to replace. I only want to pot up and maybe prune the roots when necessary, not report. Has anyone used Lechuza PON  http://lechuza.us/LECHUZA-PON/PON-TERRAPON.html as their only growing media?

Citrus General Discussion / Re: fertilizer difference?

Mark, That is the exact fertilizer I use.  Fortunately, I can purchase it locally from a greenhouse supplier. - Millet

How many tsp per gallon would be appropriate for constant feeding?

In the citrus world fertilizer can be grouped in two or three sections of growers. One like Foilage Pro 9-3-6 and others like Peters 25-5-15, and i do not know in actual application. It seams that peters is a tad better. Meyer lemon need more?.I now have about 20 tree's in containers so i have to get serious about the right amounds Since i bought a 25 lbs of peters i have to stay with it for a while.
I mix my fert. in 7 gls containers,is 6 level tbl's too much?

Luak, I believe you got those recommendations from me - the DG and Peters foods.  I'm not anal about what I use and will rotate foods.  For instance, I wanted a bit more foliage push or support so the other day I hit them with a very high quality turf food made by Plantex - 35-5-10 with micros.  Having said that, my go to food is still Peters and I use it on a lot of plants, not just citrus. It's a bargain too. http://www.amazon.com/77900-Performance-Fertilizer-25-5-15-25-Pound/dp/B008JSIKCU/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_0_1

I also go light on feeding maintaining more of a continuous feed drill at 1 tsp/gal.  2 tsp/gal. is pushing for me and that's with collected rain water as the carrier.

Your trees look great!  Regarding your pots, if you aren't using root tip pruning pot systems, you're missing it.  ;)

Gotta ask, you're probably in zone 7b, what do you do come winter?

Based on what I read from Yara's website (http://www.yara.us/agriculture/crops/citrus/key-facts/nutritional-summary/), citrus seem to uptake npk at a different ratio than 5-1-3. It also states that citrus use a lot of calcium. I currently use foliage pro which has all necessary micronutrients at 3/4 tsp. per gallon but I still seem to have deficiencies, probably nitrogen. I'd like to switch to Peter's 25-5-15 but I believe it doesn't have calcium. Do you notice any issues or add a source of calcium?
