Eugenia ID
« on: October 30, 2021, 06:40:15 PM »
I found this one fruiting in my yard and can't remember where the seed came from. Any ideas on what this is? Thanks.

I think you might be right. I do have a smaller one that is not fruiting, maybe I got one earlier. Thanks

Can you give us a taste report in the future? I’ve heard the taste is variable, sometimes it is bland and sometimes is tastes like a mix of persimmon and guava

Could you also put me up for seeds when they’re ripe?
Looking to grow it for the fruit!

It's Eugenia Pseudopsidium which is known as the Christmas Cherry

You can buy seedlings from seller 9waters on Etsy

Christmas cherry is much rounder and the leaves are glossier than E. Observa,
And pics and traits of E. Observa match the picture given, long, red, fruits with nice dull green leaves.

Adam, I did taste one, it was a bit astringent, but had a guava taste. I'll let them get a lot riper and save some seeds.

Maybe the fruit quality gets better as it ages, since I’ve heard most eugenias tend to act like that. Observa, as I’ve heard, also fruits multiple times a year

I would agree with it being odserva. It looks like the one I had years ago. Unfortunately the fruit from my bush were not good so I got rid of the plant.

Cheers,
