I just looked at the PinkGlow site, and it seems the price has come down to $29, at least from the West Coast Distributor.

Is there a thread for San Diego Mango growers?  I'd especially be interested in participating... with spring in the air and huge blooms on my trees, it's all I can think about.

I'd also love a chance to share scions with other people locally.

Here's my Mallika in full bloom:

And my Zebda - first time either have bloomed so much:

Mango is an evergreen tree.
We can graft it any time except during month with frost.
Use veneer with nurse leaf.

These were grafted 2/28/2020 in FV.
Scions were 1 node each, with nurse leaf.
Removed 1/2 of leaf and bagged with a bit of water.

Both grafts are flowering.
You should graft now if you have scions.

Whoa... this seems like a black diamond move.  Can you explain the concept of "nurse leaf" a bit better?

I forgot to list my information out, but it's all in my account information. I requested one of each.

Are Kent also mono?

« on: September 09, 2020, 12:03:40 PM »
I used Kents for rootstock last year since I lost access to a Turpentine tree. Much more vigorous from the start; since it's a mono seed, all the energy from the seed is going into only one seedling (where a poly has multiple seedlings each taking a segmented share of the seed energy). A Kent at 4 months old seems twice as thick and (much) taller than a Turp seedling. Currently I have Pineapple Pleasure (double-stone grafted), Ice Cream, PSM, and Honey Kiss grafted to year-old Kents. So far, so good. I worry the Ice Cream and Honey Kiss might be a problem in the long-run with the vigorous rootstock, we shall see....

thanks for the info, another concern i have is the rootstock vigor, especially with pickering, i worry that the rootstock may "outrun" the graft and start to produce branching below the graft.

If that happens, you can always trim back the rootstock, right? Or graft another scion to it?

From my own notes (largely based on the tropical acres farms site):

Dot: "Originally it was speculated to be a Carrie seedling, though USDA pedigree analysis estimated it was from ‘Zill’, to which it also probably bears more resemblance in terms of shape and ripening traits."

While Edward and Gary are the parents of Coconut Cream, they're also the parents of "Seacrest/Triple Sec" and of the appropriately named "Edgar"

E-4/Sugarloaf has both Edward and Pettigrew (or possibly Gary) in its parentage.

TAF lists Cecilove as a cross between Carrie and ZINC and Jakarta as Kent and (likely) Bombay. Also, Kent is a hybrid between Brooks and Haden.

Zill's O-15 is from Jakarta

Spirit of '76 is a natural cross between Haden and Zill

I picked up 30 Keitts and 20 (mostly overripe) Kents.

I'm freezing the Kents for smoothies, and planting the seeds. The Keitts aren't quite ripe yet.

Cost me $15

These Keitts are excellent quality.  Just a hint of sour, on a background of sweet.  My kids (and I) like them more than the duller, sweeter Kents.

I just bought some scions from a poster with the name "Vincent" that arrived quickly, in great shape!

I know he had Kathy and Mahachanok, among a bunch of others.

So you're thinking I didn't really eat these mangos, Viraldonutz?  Elaborate.  Oh wait, never mind.  You were saying that you are not writing a review, just making a comment.  My old brain froze up there!
Haha, I would never impugn your posts, John! You do a wonderful job describing each mango you review -- I feel like I'm right there with you.  Keep it up!

After another 2 weeks, I've trimmed off all the rootstock leaves from 7 of my 11 trees, exactly one of each of the seven cultivars!

I'm still sheltering and watching the two CC trees, as well as one LZ and one CAC.  They have growth, but it's just really slow for whatever reason.

Also, I ended up cutting off one of the parallel trunk/branches of the CAC in the picture I posted above, despite a super healthy scion take -- it pained me to do so, but I figured it's better for the long-term health and shape of the tree.  Now it's just a single trunk with a single scion grafted on.

Not a real review, but I just wanted to say I'm absolutely LOVING the Kent and Keitt mangoes currently available at my Costco.  Box of 6 costs $6.99.  Just serves to remind me that there's no such thing as a bad mango.

Except for Tommys -- you can burn them all down to the ground.

In June, I grafted:

Fruit Punch
LZ
Sunrise
CAC/COC
Coconut Cream
Manohar
Parson

I got at least one scion to take on all of them -- the LZ was the toughest, though... I had 2 scions die, 1 grow, and one is just sitting there laughing at me, not growing, but still green. Coconut Cream was also difficult, I had 2 scions die. FP and Sunrise growing real slow -- COC, Manohar, and Parson took off wonderfully!

Currently, I'm waiting on an order from Tropical Acres with the following:

Pickering (to replace my tree that died from heat -- I assume)
Maha Chanok
Super Julie - J12
Sugarloaf - E4
Orange Sherbet
Venus
Buttercream
M-4

Getting 2 scions each... I hope to start grafting this evening!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Dot mango dying in SoCal
« on: August 17, 2020, 02:20:05 PM »
I have a young Dot mango tree which is holding 2 tennis-ball-sized mangoes currently.  I was reading somewhere that Dot mangoes are better picked green mature and allowed to ripen off the tree.  Is that correct?  What have you done?  When should I pick them in SoCal?

21
Yep, that's what I figured out eventually. Haven't tipped anything in the last two years.

Any suggestions on anything I can do to encourage branching growth?

22
I'm interested in this as well. I've tried tipping frequently with two of my trees with limited success.

On my Mallika tree, growth has been consistently upright no matter where I tip it (I've never paid much attention to tipping locations, though).  It stands upright pretty well.  The tipping, though, doesn't always work... lots of times the tips will just stay tipped and brown up.  Maybe it's somehow better at only growing when it has enough energy to do so "safely"?

Compare my Zebda tree, it nearly always responds to tipping, but produces very weak, sprawling branches more than half the time.  Again, I've never noticed tipping location to make a difference.

My much younger Keitt tree was very sprawling, horizontal growing its first two years in the ground, but now that I've installed automatic irrigation, all of its new growth has been entirely vertical -- it's twice as tall as it was 6 months ago!  I'll have to wait and see it the new growth hardens up strong.  I haven't really tipped this tree at all, more than maybe once or twice.

23
Exactly two months ago, I ordered 24 scions from JF, and I tried my very first graft onto a bunch of rootstocks that I had bought earlier for grafting.

I thought it'd be fun to check back and report my successes and failures in a thread here.

A few notes -- two weeks after grafting all 24 scions, I had to leave town for almost a month.  During my absence, I set them up with an automated dripline, and set them out in full sun, but underneath a homemade greenhouse I threw together using some scrap wood and painters-grade plastic floor covering.  I set the covering up on blocks so there was a 10" opening at the bottom to allow air to flow freely, but still capture some heat and moisture while protecting from the sun.  I seemed to work great.

My biggest problem was that when I returned home to check on them, all of them had grown multiple new shoots out of the rootstock material, while pushing very little from the grafted material.  So exactly one month ago, I cut back all the new non-scion growth, and I've been checking for new non-scion growth every couple days and cutting it back before it grows.  I'm sure that if I hadn't wasted all that energy on new non-scion growth, I'd be doing even better right now.

Anyways, on to the results.  I grafted:

2 Coconut Cream scions - 2 successes - 1" growth on one, and 7" growth on the other.
2 Coconut Cream scions - 1 success - 1" growth, and no growth yet, but still alive
2 Coconut Cream scions - 0 successes - both no growth yet, but still alive

2 Lemon Zest scions - 1 success, 1 failure (dead) - the live scion has 2 small pushes of less than an inch
2 Lemon Zest scions - 1 success, 1 failure (dying/barely green) - the live scion has a 4" growth

2 CAC/COC scions - 1 success, 1 failure (dead) - the live scion has a small push of less than an inch
2 CAC/COC scions - 2 successes - biggest grower of them all - one scion has pushes of 8" and 10", the other has 5" and 6"!

2 Manohar scions - 2 successes - 2" and 5"

2 Parson scions - 1 success, 1 failure (dead) - the live scion has growth that's 15" long!

3 Fruit Punch scions - 1 success, 1 failure (dead) - the live scion has growth of 5" and 4" plus two more buds.  There's also one with no growth yet, but it's still alive.

3 Sunrise scions - 1 success - 2" plus two scions that have no growth yet, but are still alive.

All-in-all, that makes 13 successes, 5 failures, and 6 "no-growth-yet-but-still-green" -- I'm ecstatic with this result, given it's my first time grafting anything!

Thanks again, JF, for the good quality budwood!

24
Quick update, my "pin through the graft" technique worked!  The graft took, and is about 7 inches long now!

Thanks for the advice in this thread, I used deeper cuts and tape to do a couple other cleft grafts, and all of them are still alive (though only one has pushed).

I'm not a prolific mango taster, I've only tasted probably 20 different cultivars in my life, but I wanted to share some thoughts on a brand new mango I tried that I'd never heard of before.

Deimos, from Richard Campbell's Mangomen Homestead.

I received it in a shipped box a few weeks back, and had no idea what to expect, but I was overpowered by a delicious, sweet, citrusy... extremely BRIGHT flavor -- I don't know how else to describe it.  It was neck-and-neck with Sweet Tart for the best mango in the box.

According to Mangomen, it's a Myatrynat seedling that they're evaluating, and very excited about.  If you get a chance, I'd highly recommend you try it out, if only so I can get your (likely more-experienced) opinions on the matter.

Nope, unfortunately.  I was visiting family.
