Russel's Sweet Garcinia in the USA at last
« on: April 30, 2015, 08:59:18 PM »
Russel's Sweet Garcinia has made it to the USA at last (I'm sure a few other people have them, but very few).

I feel privileged to have this plant in my possession.

I figured I'd make a thread dedicated to this garcinia variety...I plan to document the process of growing this fruit from seed to fruition...and long before the seedlings fruit, I plan to propagate them (grafting onto xanthochymus, or other rootstock)...with some good fortune, I can get started grafting them next year...but depends on how slow they grow.

this is the first seed (of several planted) to germinate.

more to come soon, stay tuned.

although I can't make any promises (let's not count eggs before they hatch), I'm taking note of requests (on this thread...not via PM or email...too hard to keep track)

I will make sure to take care of friends and forum members before the general public!

2 parcels went to the US including one to the mainland and one of those 2 was generously endowed. There were many requests that could not be filled and I apologize to those people and will pursue it further next season. It is Jim Reeves who should be thanked.
Unlike many in the genus a male and female is needed.Lucs Mexican is in for a battle royale as this is the Mayweather of Garcinias. You'd hock up an achachairu in horror after trying this bad boy.It has the size, flesh and taste to really mix it.Good luck Saff.Did yours come from far west or from the near north?

Feast your eyes on this fruit once again. If you have rats beware as they seem to have an unusual attraction to the seeds.A friend lost all 4 of his seeds in one night when rats broke in to his greenhouse and made  beeline for them.

Glad this is in the hands of some propagation masters and will spread now ;D ;D ;D
Thanks Mike for all your hard work Im glad there are still many custodians of precious overlooked and underknown fruits!
Maybe one day in the future we can see a head to head comparison Lucs VS Russels 8)

I don't know that there will be much comparison, they seem like they are from two very different tribes of the garcinia family. I bet the taste and texture are miles apart, unlike comparing Lucs to Achachairu or Russells to Mundu.

Ricardo it is just exaggerating in a joking way. Achachairu is quite acidic being a Rheedia style Garcinia. As BMc pointed out they should be compared to an Asian species with similar characteristics and American garcinias with each other.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to distribute this plant, being that it's dioecious, and we won't know which seedlings are male/female until years from now.

maybe it would be best to label each seedling that I have (with a number or name), so each person will know which seedling their tree came from.

then, after I separate the boys from the girls, (sometime around the year 2020  ??? ) I can figure out who needs male or female scions, and then I can mail them to be grafted?

I can't think of a better way...maybe someone can?

maybe by the time we figure out which is male or female, we will have the capability to clone them with ease?  it will be interesting to see if and when technological advances in the field of plant propagation will finally make grafting by humans obsolete   ;D

I'd love to be on the list for this one as well, if it will survive here.

Mike, how tropical is the Russel's Garcinia?  is it one of the more ultra tropical plants like the mangosteen, or might it be able to survive in Southern CA (Zone 10b)?
