Can anyone tell what variety of mango this is?
« on: September 13, 2020, 08:21:39 AM »
One of my friends asked me to post this picture of a mango fruit he is growing. Can anyone tell which variety it could be? I believe it was sold to him as a Phoenix.

It's beautiful! Love the yellow dots all over. Nice size too.

Sorry, no help on ID.

The color reminds me of Mallika but not the shape, some Mallikas grown in India do not get that long shape that they get here.

Thanks guys, I hate it when trees are mislabeled.

Satya, Ive seen some of those fatter filled in Mallikas on my friends tree before. Hopefully my friend can give more info once the fruit is ripe.

Looks big and would be good to throw it on the scales. I can't place it and those yellow dots have got me curious. It's what's inside that counts.

Simon,

I'm pretty sure that's a Phoenix, and a big one. The white spots on the fruit is typical of Phoenix (and Mallika). Here's a pic of the last two Phoenix mangos still hanging in St. Pete (3rd bloom).

The shape does not look right for Phoenix, no matter what the size is. The intense "spots" look odd, too.  Now, with that being said, I have seen fruit grown in Cali be slightly different in characteristics compared to those grown in Florida.

Diea not look like a Mallika but again, same disclaimer as above.  Mallika leaves are easy to ID so would be easy to eliminate that with a picture of the tree.

I have spots like that on my tomatoes from the ash or the smoke. Could be that.
