I'm glad you decided to get a tree. Don't even try the ones at the Asian markets. They somehow get really bad quality fruits ever since after the first year they sold them there. Maybe they're very under developed.
Jujube tastes like jujube. The good ones are sweet and juicy during the crunchy stage. They all become chewy and sweet when dried. There's a single elongated seed inside each fruit. At different stages of development, it might remind people of something they've had before.
One problem with comparing tastes before actually tasting the fruit is that people have their own preference for certain things. I don't prefer to eat chicken or apples, but I do like some things that are said to taste like them, including jujube. I guess apple and cherry are pretty safe to compare to since there are things that got named mamey apple and Surinam cherry. Or maybe it's to trick people into thinking they're comparable.
That durian tastes like garlic saying is so very untrue, yet, I'm not sure if that helped or hurt people's willingness to try it.
It's best to try it yourself if you have the opportunity, but don't get the lightweight market jujubes. The heavier ones might have a chance of being decent.
