Hey Michael,

Wow, that's incredible the color of the yellow plants. I would have guessed the plants would have turned green as they grew larger. Thanks for sharing the picture.

Hello Friends,

After my initial post about the Fijian Longan (Matoa) seeds that I had purchased, I wanted to post a picture of their progress.  As I had mentioned in my previous post, 19 of the 21 seeds that I received have germinated and are doing well.  There are only 12 plants in this picture, but the rest look just like the ones that are represented here.

Here is a current picture of the Matoa Seeds:

However, after the seeds germinated and they begin to grow, I began to notice some differences amongst them.  A majority of the seeds germinated and grew a "Green" sprout, while a small group of them grew an "Orange" sprout.  When I initially received the seeds, I was told by the seller that the seeds were from a combination of Red and Green fruit, but unfortunately he was unable to tell me which were which.  Therefore, I am posting these pictures and was wondering if anyone might be able to comment on this?

Here are germinated seeds with "Green" Sprouts

Here are germinated seeds with "Orange" Sprouts

I was hoping that someone might be able to provide me with some more information and/or an explanation as to what is happening.

Thanks

Jacob

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Matoa Seeds
« on: September 04, 2016, 11:55:56 PM »
Hello Friends,

I just wanted to let everyone know that I recently purchased some Matoa/Fijian Longan (Pometia pinnata) seeds from "Nengzie".  They were a combination of Green and Red Matoa Fruit seeds.  They arrived approximately 1 week after they were shipped, and arrived in excellent condition.  They were extremely clean without any remnants of any fruit flesh, and were also very Fresh.

I purchased 20 seeds but received a total of 21 seeds.  As of today, 19 of the 21 seeds have germinated and are approximately 1" inch tall above the soil level.  I think a huge part of my success in germinating these seeds was that they were cleaned extremely well before they were shipped; they were absolutely immaculate.  In my experience with these seeds, they have a very high tendency to Rot if any flesh is left on the seed.

I know that there is a high interest in Matoa/Fijian Longans right now, but there has also been problems with Members receiving fresh seeds, as well as success in germination.  Therefore, I just wanted to let everyone know that I purchased some seeds from "Nengzie", that were extremely fresh, super clean, and had a very high rate of Germination.

I will post some pics in the next few days.

Thanks,

Jacob

Hello

I have one in a 25 gallon pot and it is like 8' - 9' feet tall and big.  It does great in the pot.  I have never had any problems with it, and I get a ton of fruit off of it almost year-round.  It should do just fine in a pot, just make sure that it get plenty of water.  Mine is so big you wouldn't believe it. Do anyone wanna buy it?

Hello Again,

Thank you all for checking out the pics, and for all of your great comments.

merce3 - Like I mentioned before, I Mulch like crazy with all of my in-ground trees.  It creates such an excellent environment and foundation for all of my fruit trees.  Then, I also fertilize a couple of times a year with "Vigoro Citrus & Avocado Plant Food".  It is a 6-4-6 time release fertilizer that works great for me and my needs.  I can get a 40 lbs. bag at the HD for $20.  I also compost all of my green waste and kitchen scraps into the most heavenly "black gold" that you will ever lay your eyes on.  I am lucky to have created some really healthy and efficient Compost Bins that are absolute Super Stars with regards to the way the work and produce.  Periodically, I also blend and cultivate the Compost into the existing soil.

Zands - Thank you, and yes, the best part is getting to distribute them to my friends and family.....Definitely!!

Tropicaliste - I would if I could brother!

Starch - Thank you my friend.

AnnonaMangoLord45
- You have a pretty good Lychee tree to start with.  Just hang in there.  Once you get another year or 2 worth of growth on the tree, they start to grow so much faster, almost uncontrollably.  As for the burnt tips, I would not worry to much about it.  For some reason, almost all Lychee trees that I have ever seen in California (with the exception of mine ;)) have this type of phenomenon going on.  I don't know if its the weather, lack of humidity, a water issue, a fertilizer problem, or what, but everyone that grows Lychee trees in California experiences this.  Therefore, I wouldn't worry about it too much, as it doesn't really seem to effect the trees or fruit, on any real level.

paulmctigue - Thanks!

boxturtle - My Fertilizing = I fertilize a couple of times a year with "Vigoro Citrus & Avocado Plant Food".  It is a 6-4-6 time release fertilizer that works great for me and my needs.  I can get a 40 lbs. bag at the HD for $20.

Bananaizme - I am not familiar with Shamus O'Leary's method, nor have I ever had any issues with Fertilizer burn.

Bush2Beach - Yeah, these Lychee trees really love their location.  They are super healthy and really quite easy to maintain.  They have been growing like gangbusters for the last couple of years.  They used to be almost twice as large, but unfortunately we have some crazy winds that come through our area, and they almost totally destroyed my trees.  They were torn to shreds.  They have bounced back nicely, but they are not nearly as big as they once were.  As for my more "rare" stuff that I have, most of it is no longer in existence.  I went out of the country a while back for an extended period.  The person who I paid to water and tend to my plants left me hanging and a majority of my stuff died. :'( :'( :'(

Thanks again everyone!  Tomorrow I will post some pictures of the fruit I pick.

Hello My Friends

Thanks for taking a look at my Lychee trees and fruit.

Simon - Good to hear from you my friend.   As for a comparison between the 2, I really haven't had a good chance to compare.  The Sweetheart Lychees are about 1 week behind the Hak Ip.  So the few Sweethearts that I tasted I feel were a bit early, but were still super delicious.  The Hak Ip Lychees are delicious to, but I think the flavor not as deep or complex as the Sweetheart.  In the coming week, I will do a proper comparison and let you know, but I think the Sweetheart's will be the winner.

Pug - Thanks for the compliment!

Frank - It's good to be back my friend.  My Achacha is really big but still hasn't flowered yet. Very soon I hope!

Scott - Hey Scott, good to hear from you.  They have been in the ground for about 4.5 years and I planted them from 7 gallon pots.

Box Turtle - I am not quite sure about their age, but like I said, they have been in the ground for about 4.5 years and I planted them from 7 gallon pots. I have done very little pruning except lifting.  I have the trees on drip and put it on maybe once every 10 days.  I mulch the trees like crazy though.  At least 3" to 4" inches thick a couple of times a year since planting.  It seems to keep them happy, and drastically improve my soil.

Floridays - Thanks for the kind words.  You are right, absolutely no squirrels or other animals to bother my trees and fruit.

Thanks again everyone.  I will be sure to post some more pictures once I pick the fruit.

Hello Friends,

I wanted to share some pictures of my Lychee trees (Hak Ip & Sweetheart) and this year's Lychee fruit before I harvest.  I am probably going to start harvesting the Hak Ip in the next 2-3 days, and the Sweetheart in about 5-6 days.  I would say I have about 30 lbs of fruit left on the trees this year. It would have been more but my entire family has been coming over to "taste test", and have probably eaten about 5-7 pounds off the trees so far.

"HAK IP" LYCHEE TREE & LYCHEES

"SWEETHEART" LYCHEE TREE & LYCHEES - These Lychees are absolutely huge.  I have never seen Lychees this big before, and I have had Lychees from all over the place.  These pictures really don't do them and their size justice.

Super Big Sweetheart Lychees that are Bigger than Golf Balls, and 1.5 times bigger than the Diameter

After I pick these Lychees, I will take some more pictures so that you can see how truly huge these Sweetheart Lychees are.  They are also absolutely delicious, super sweet......just phenomenal!

Thanks,

Jacob

Thanks everyone!

Barath - My trees are outside year round and I give them no protection in the Winter and they do just fine.  So far, I haven't had any damage from the cold.

Richard and Puglvr - Thanks  :D

Simon - These trees are in the ground.  I have pruned them sparingly, more so to shape them, but hardly ever.  I'll let you know how they taste!

Just so everyone knows, Jack (AnnonAddict) has no idea what variety or Species this Ice Cream Bean tree is.  The owner of the this particular tree doesn't even know.  So, if you are purchasing these seeds based in the information Jack (AnnonAddict) is providing, he is simply guessing.  BUYERS BEWARE!!
