Had an interesting cherimoya from seed have blue/purple pigmentation. It seems to only occur where the skin on outside is damaged/bruised. What are some thoughts?

Mr. mangonuts - here's a pic of the small grafted Venus.  When I turned the plant around
I noticed a couple new shoots coming up!  Looks healthy.  It was the standard cleft graft on a manila.
Yeah, I've not had a lot of luck with grafting directly on planted trees and I think you (and I) probably know by now with our heat, the window for grafting is much narrower than for everyone else.  I think I managed this one late summer but can't remember.  I remember I shaded it heavily and gave it a good chance to take.

sorry for the blurry pic....

Gary

Congrats Gary on the successful Venus graft!  Curious to see how well Venus will do in the desert and SoCal.   Happy planting! Please keep us posted.

I just got a grafted Venus from CRFG plant sell a couple months ago. Grafted onto Manilla rootstock, hopefully does well.

I like reed and heard sharwil and gem are excellent, but depends what you like.

Maybe make those cracking branches into cuttings at the expense of the tree.

Looks like disease of DF, not much is known about diseases on them that I'm aware of. Looks like Virus X. Best to restart with sterile cuttings and probably best to remove the trellis and current DF before restarting. Good luck

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Cherimoya pruning
« on: July 19, 2020, 07:54:06 PM »
Like others have commented, cherimoyas can take a hard pruning. The reason why you would want to do a hard pruning is that they actually fruit on new growth. That being said, if your cherimoyas are seedlings, it could take a few years before you see any flowers forming. Though overall, your plants look great and in no time you'll be enjoying the fruits of your labor.

Can anyone help ID this vine. It's used in Chinese Cuisine blended and added to rice flour and made into balls then steamed. My grandma called it "Black Yuan"?

Has anyone used this product with good results especially for Jaboticabas or tropical plants in general.

Okay, thanks. I just want to grow some more from the seeds it produces. Mine seem to set fairly well alone.

I have one Cherry of the Rio Grande in my backyard in Southern CA. I was wondering if the seeds grow true?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 1st cotton candy aprium harvest
« on: June 23, 2019, 12:00:02 PM »
I bought one the year as I love apricots but my wife doesn't. She does like plums. I figured a good compromise. Unfortunately, my tree has issues. There's a big sap area coming out of one of the branches. When I asked the nursery about it they said it was just damaged it would be fine. But now it's all dying off above the sap. Should I just cut it below the sap?
My
Mine is doing the same thing.
I read online that they can get dieback if it rains shortly after pruning, so pruning was recommended to be done as soon as harvest is finished.
Possibly from boring insects and the tree is sapping to push out/kill insect or is disease from gummosis.

T-post and tree-o-mate support work wonder shaping trees. My Barbados after planting with and without support.

I have a similar set-up, but using just a regular 8ft green stake and green garden tie-tape. Im just wondering because i've heard that supporting a weak tree doesn't encourage a strong root system in the long run.

24
I have one barbados cherry and two pomegranate trees that are leaners. Would propping them up with stakes and reducing/limiting water force them to establish a stronger root system so they can support themselves eventually?
