Mahalo Steph. Looks like another variety I’ll have to try to graft 😁

Someone just suggested I grow Spinola as well. Stephen do you have any pictures of Spinola? I would love to see it. I grafted hulumanu on my cocktail avocado tree and Leahi which is an old variety that is no longer propagated it has sweet meat, bears heavy and produces September-October. Great tasting avocado but the meat to seed ration is bad. I Would be interested in grafting Spinola if it has better meat to seed ratio.

Pics of Leahi avocado. This cut on is one of the better meat to seed ratio. It can get thinner

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Ziman pink jackfruit leaves

I’ve grown Ziemann’s Pink for about 25 years. I find it less susceptible to splitting than most of the cvs we have. It is a high latex fruit. The color looks more ruddy orange to me than pink but I’m willing to embrace pink if people tell me it’s there. It’s generally considered the best jakfruit most people around here have had.

Mahalo Steph. From your experience sounds like it's a good one to grow, minus the high latex. I look forward to trying it soon.

Kona Fruit Farm and PahoaJo, any updates on your Ziman pink? Hows the fruit quality? Have either of you found that it is prone to splitting as Ben Mango has experiences?

[snip] I would like to graft a couple other varieties onto the mini cado tree but will this “dwarf” interstock
produce slower growing grafts or will the other grafts just dominate the mini cado and grow to a typically
large avocado tree size?

How small a tree are you aiming for?  You never said...

The smallest avocado I've read about is 'Wurtz,' considered a true dwarf avocado, which at
maturity reaches only 15 ft tall. is that about a large as you'd want your dwarf avocado?

The 'Wurtz' dwarf might be a 'starting point' to graft onto.

I am putting a wurtz in ground and was planning on grafting onto it. I am hoping to keep the tree around 10 ft

Inverted grafting has been tossed around a bit over the years for its potential dwarfing effects on avocado. Might be worth a shot.

Haha I would have never thought about that. I’ll have to research this. Sounds interesting. Thanks

I haven't tried doing that, but I know that the conclusion of UC researchers after many decades of trying to find a dwarfing rootstock for avocados was that it's not possible. The vigor of the scion is generally controlled by the scion itself, so while you can use cultural practices to limit size or growth rate (less fertilizer, less water, more aggressive pruning, etc.), it's not something you can control via rootstock, other than in minor ways (maybe it will grow a little slower but still reach the same mature size).

But who knows, maybe they just didn't find the right one, or the right combination of interstems.

Thanks for the info. Good to know. Guess I’ll just have to prune religiously

I have read that to creat a “dwarf” mango tree of any desired cultivar, farmers use a “dwarf” interatock. Does this theory hold true for avocados? I want to plant a wurtz/mini cado tree in a space where the tree can not get too big. I would like to graft a couple other varieties onto the mini cado tree but will this “dwarf” interstock produce slower growing grafts or will the other grafts just dominate the mini cado and grow to a typically large avocado tree size?

Aloha Steph,

Thanks for the info. Good to hear Ziemann's Pink is a winner. Bummer about J30. The little I read up on it sounded to be good but maybe that's outdated. In your experience, do these two fruit approximately at the same time or different time? Glad they both seem to have manageable growth habits as I am a small backyard grower.

Mahalo for sharing your knowledge

I’m looking for any information On J30 and Zimmen’s pink jack fruit, growth habit, Fruiting season, quality of fruit etc. I can’t seem to find too much especially on Ziman pink. Thanks.

All scions came from one tree that was tagged Big Jim Peluche.

« on: October 23, 2023, 10:29:37 PM »
So I was given loquat scions that were labeled Big Jim Peluche. I tried getting clarification on whether it is Big Jim or Peluche but got no clear answer. Is Big Jim is a Peluche seedling? Or is there a Big Jim Peluche variety? Or is this simply mislabeled and now I'm stuck with a NoID?

Link has photos and explanation that's very helpful. I collect pollen around 6:00 pm and pollinate the following afternoon or evening. For me pollen last about 48-72 hours in fridge Without desiccant packet. Hope you get some fruit

I acquired an ice cream bean tree two years ago and plants it in ground. The tree finally flowered and is setting fruit but the flowers and beans look a little different than the more common icecream bean I have seen. The person I got the plant from does not know which one it is either. Would love to know what exactly I am growing and when to harvest it. Pods are yellowing but I picked one the other day and hardly any fluff inside, almost all seed right now. Thanks for your help and advice.

Anyone growing Talpeno 1 avocado? Any info or pictures of the fruit? I received fruit from two different sources and they are not the same. I just want to know what my grafted tree will produce.

Early on in this thread there was a brief mention of Leo’s Costa Rican dragon fruit H. costaricensis X S. Megalanthus. It was red flesh and no thorns on the fruit. Is there any update on this one?

Wow 133 pages and I’m spent! Lots of greats Info for a newbie like me. I just started growing dragon fruit. I presently have palora, frankies red, sugar dragon, bruni, and some unknown whites.

Thanks Mike T for your post #3113 it really cleared things up for me as I was getting all caught up in the hype of getting a million different types of dragon fruit. Hopefully I can cut out all the unnecessary collecting. Any suggestions on sweet fertile whites or are they not worth it in comparison to the red and purple flesh fruits?

Others I’m interested in getting are condor, delight, and American beauty. I’m just curious if these are good ones to get or any reason why I should pass on any one of them? Are there any must haves other then Sugar dragon? Also, stupid question but is Columbian red a specific cultivar of dragon fruit or simply any red type from Columbia?

Thanks 🙏🏻

Oscar, do you find the fruit to be superior to Achacha as claimed even though they are not alike in taste?

23
Oscar has your fruit ripened yet? I’m curios to hear what you think of it.

Not to throw in a wrench in your plans, but I just tried at Frankie's a Mit32.  WOW.  Idk about growth habit, but that's another must grow avo.

Ooooooh interesting.... I need a small tree though  :(

went dyslexic.  MIT13 not 32.

Anyway, going to graft scions of MIT13 and Yani on a friend's seedlig avo trees in Pearl City this weekend.  We'll see how they go.  So long as you're on it with pruning, can always keep it manageable.  CHeck out Ken Love's stuff.  All under 10ft.

Maybe I can plant the MIT13 above the stream and hope the state doesn’t come clean the stream out  ;D

Thank Millet. I was hoping to stay all organic, but seeing that the lemon tree isn’t responding well I will be switching over to conventional fertilizer as you suggested. Thanks for the fertilizer ratio. Good to know
