In Malaysia they usually use "Borneo". In Indonesia they know this name but do not like it.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Persimmon (Diospyros kaki) in Poland?
« on: November 17, 2019, 01:14:40 PM »
I do not know what D. lotus varieties we have here in 8a but most trees are very astringent until hit with some harsch frost. There is one tree wherevyou can eat the fruit in nov without any frost. All trees produce tons of seedlings whic flower themselves. In 7a (Marburg) i saw many D.  lotus with many fruit but no seedlings.
Rojo brilliante is our main supermarket kaki almost always coming from Spain. That does not sound like sth that will grow well in Poland.

Good. So i will look for the book in Malaysian book shops.
Actually calling Kalimantan Borneo when you are in Indonesia is like calling Scottland England. They are pretty touchy about that. And even in the Malaysian part there are people who explain to me that this is not Malaysia, this is Sarawak. Kind of like North Ireland is not Britain. Such things might not be too important for us but after some time i renamed my Kalimantan videos from "Borneo" to "Kalimantan" as to not insult anyone.

I have never seen D. kaki in 6b and even the trees i saw in 7a did not look too good.
Why dont you get some tasty D. lotus variety? Tens of thousands of cherry sized persimmons per ature tree and in my experience much hardier than D. kaki.

Thanks for the book suggestions but i take off tonight, no time for delivery. Might liik for them in Malaysia.

@Kada: thank you and if you think Borneo is an adventure you should go to Kalimantan. No white people at all. When i went back to Sarawak i was staring at every white person not believing my eyes😂

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Feral columnar plum trees
« on: November 14, 2019, 06:50:51 AM »
Hi,
I found a group of plum trees from suckers in Heidelberg/Germany and assumed that they are damson plum (Prunus domestica ssp insititia) They all had a very slender growth form (usually more than 10x as tall than wide). since they were growing close together i attributed that to competition. Since then i have seen them several times growing from suckers from rootstock and they were always incredibly slender even when growing with enough space between them. Here is the original video:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sP6kUjpO4BM

Since the fruits are pretty good and the plants are obviously very vigorous i wonder what the variety (always used for rootstock) is and if it would be worth promoting it for small gardens

Yes, that seems quite likely. Thank you.
So nobody thinks it could be schideana?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Persea americana or schiedeana
« on: November 12, 2019, 07:40:12 AM »
Hi,
bought some long avocado from the Dominican republic in an ethnic Indian shop in Germany. The biggest fruit there were 1,2 kg or 2,64 pound. Not sure about the variety. Could it be Persea schiedeana? Or if not can anyone guess the variety?

Thank you.

Yes, the seed was from Brazil.

In most years thinning was not necessary because it produced few fruit which were not significantly larger. But all the other loquats in town fruit once in 10 years so this one is by far the best tree. And the biggest and most beautiful, too.

Thank you. Such comments motivate me to make more videos. In January i plan to go back to Borneo.
The durian is from Tamiang Layang. Just one single fruit on the market. Never saw it again.

Already posted this elsewhere but the best Loquats i have ever eaten were from a seedling of a Brazilian fruit growing in Germany and producing fruit regularly despite the cold climate. This year it produced over 80 kg of huge, tasty fruits:

Yes, the durian hybrid was great. Fortunately they did not pick it underripe like most kutejensis.

Thanks, Future

I would be very grateful for that.

Juglans regia
Mahonia aquifolium
Cotoneaster, one of the countless horizontalis varieties maybe

45
This is Crataegus pedicellata, commonly grown in Germany and one of the tastiest hawthorns i know. I usually pick a couple pounds each year and can totally recomment it as a hardy alternative to azarole apple.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Cocos nucifera Growing in Madeira...
« on: October 23, 2019, 10:46:31 AM »
The trees in the Canaries are Cocos and not Parajubaea for sure. I might have seen Parajubaea somewhere around Puerto on Tenerife but i have harvested Cocos on Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and La Palma. The fruit are 10 times bigger than Parajubaea fruit, no way to confuse them when fruiting.
And yes, i am aware that i messed up the numbers when calculating what percentage of the Canary islands fruit are edible. Just take them as a rough estimate😂

In the nearby Canary islands coconut trees grow well in a just slightly warmer climate. They are being planted everywhere along the beaches. Fruit are not uncommon but when i picked them i got about 30% good nuts with flesh and water, 60% looking normal on the outside but with a espindle shaped shell, a bit of flesh and no water. Some 20% (but usually 100% from one tree look very normal o  the outside, up to 1.5 kg, plump and green but when you cut them open there is no shell, no flesh, no water, just fibers.
Maybe the climate is not perfect but you can get good coconuts there. My point being do not give up, i am sure with increased coconut cultivation for landscaping in Madeira you will get your nuts sooner or later😉

48
And im not sure normal persimmon (D. kaki) will grow in 5b but D. lotus does well enough in 7a so it might be worth trying.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Most Northern Avocado Grove?

They seem to have outdoor avocado trees even in the UK. And somebody tried to persuade me to grow them in Germany, too.

Surinam cherries have a lot of sourness and the ones growing in the shade are just nos sweet enough for me. But i like really sweet fruit, anyways.😹
