Title: Cold Hardy Citrus Obsessed
Post by: will2358 on August 14, 2019, 08:13:38 PM
I have become cold hardy citrus obsessed. I told my family to cut me off from buying anymore citrus plants, as they have paid for most of them. I may need to call Stan Mckenzie and ask him to cutt me off from buying any more. Hee Hee My yard is only 140 feet by 140 feet. I had not planed on planting any of the trees in the front yard but I must, since I have bought so many citrus plants. What are your citrus numbers?
I now have
14 (1 gallon citrus)
3 (5 gallon )
and lots of cuttings and seedlings.
Some of these will be grown in pots, but a lot of them will eventually be planted outside.
What is a girl to due when she is obsessed?

You will end up planting a lot of them, some may freeze to death, you’ll problem solve what went wrong, you’ll try to replant same variety again but protect it differently the next winter, then you’ll try something else, eventually realize you’ve run out of space, but still have too many in pots, and start selling them on the local Facebook yard sale thing, etc. it’s called being a citruholic! Welcome to the club!

Buy more property Cindi. A greenhouse and citrus grove are coming. When your first bunch of grafts are successful you will get to work......

Kumin in Pennsylvania put out 20,000 seedling last year.  By comparison, you don't have much of a problem.
I started about 500 seedlings last winter, but my ignorance cut those down to about 100.
I don't have numbers on anyone else.  But I think your modest little grove shouldn't be much of a problem.  You are dealing with real citruholics here.

Bomand, I wish I could afford to buy more property because I most certainly would. I already have other fruit trees in the yard. They are being grown in large pots but they do take up space. I have an apple, peach, 2 japanese persimmon, 2 pomergranates, asian pear and 2 muscadine vines. I'm a fruit tree junkie.

Good. People that grow things are usually self sufficient and honest folks. Count yourself lucky to have an intrest that brings uou rewards, keeps you engaged and brings smiles to your face. There is nothing wrong to being a parent to trees.😁

Cindy, from your collection list if I could take one tree I would take the Xie Shan.   Xie Shan is a real winner,  I am not sure how old my Xie Shan tree is but it must be around 12 years+ old.

If anyone else is looking for Xie Shan here is a florida seller. I have not bought from them so I don't know their reputation.

I stopped counting when I had over fifty container citrus.  Now that I have tasted the fruit from all of them I am scaling way back and only keeping my favorite varieties.  It is a very satisfying hobby

I think I purchased my Xie Shan tree from Ruth at Harris, many years ago.

Harris can't ship outside of FL.  Looks like graft is the only option I have.

Harris propagates all of their citrus trees inside a USDA improved screen house.  Therefore, they can, and do, ship citrus to other states.  I'm in Colorado and I buy trees from Harris.   Even though their trees are USDA inspected and approved for shipment, I don't think they can ship into California.  Not being able to ship into California, is not Harris's fault,  but California's own ban on shipping citrus into their sate,  However, it would be worth a telephone call and Ruth at Harris.  There is a very slight chance, although I doubt it, that a California shipment could be possible, due to the fact that Harris's trees  are USDA inspected and insured to be disease free, and insect free.

Pinkturtle they do ship out of Florida. They told me that shipment would be delay for about a week due to USDA inspection.

I would recommend Briteleaf (which currently has xie shan in stock) over Harris due to the rootstock that is used.  The trees that I purchased from BriteLeaf are on trifoliate whereas  Harris uses trifoliate hybrids.
