Title: Yellow Mulberry

I first tasted this mulberry at a CRFG meeting some time ago, and took interest because of the Pina Colada flavor.

The member who brought it lost the name tag for it, but grafted it to his tree many moons ago.

The fruit are the same size as a Pakistani, but are white when unripe, and yellow when ripe. They taste just regular-sweet at the white stage, and have a flavor worth seeking only at yellow stage.

Any idea as to the name of this UNK?

It may be australian mulberry which is for sale by toptropicals?  They are not very cold hardy.  Mine died whereas Pakistan and King White survived.

Looks similar. Does "White Pakistan" have a Pina Colada flavor?

Oolie, the yellow mulberry I got from you doesn’t seem to be a white mulberry. Yours are so easy to graft onto my black Pakistan but I heard the white ones are difficult to graft. I only had one success of the Australian green out of 4 scions.

I also noted that the leaves of your yellow mulberry are smoother in texture and edge than other varieties that I have.

I'm pretty sure it's a M.rubra (red mulberry), because the buds are always encased in red paper (the technical classification means).

It's been very vigorous for me with both spade and fingered leaves.

I'm almost as eager to identify it as I am to taste it off my own tree.

It's the only mulberry other than M.nigra that really garners my interest, it's a great flavor.

Can you take a pic of your ripe fruits? It is also vigorous for me on my small container tree.

Wondering if cutting it back would induce second crop?

I didn't allow it to hold fruit to maturity this year since it's its first year. They will come off easily to the touch even if under-ripe though. If allowed to hang to full yellow, the flavor is distinctive from other mulberries.
