Double cut vs bypass pruners.
« on: August 24, 2017, 04:37:17 PM »
Why are these double cut pruners way less common than bypass pruners. I have been using my friend's Due Buoi pruners and really like them. I was going to order a pair of nice ones but I figured I would ask the pros here first. Is it a price issue? Lack of replaceable blades? It looks like ARS doesn't even make them. What is the company Maurice Kong distributes? Thanks guys.

Double cut as in anvil loppers or pruners?             (bsbullie was right)

What did I miss with bsbullie? Double cut like the picture. There are two blades that come together that cuts in both directions without the crushing action.

"Double cut" won't last long -- soon will be a gap between the two blades and no more clean cut.

Makes sense. Thanks!

I purchase these Vesco anvil pruners and have been very happy with them. If the blades wear out or if they get damaged they sell spare parts for them.

It looks like anvil pruners have a flat bottom that crushes the stem. It sounds like they are cheaper to manufacture and hold the cut better but the quality of the cut is compromised.

Get these, you'll be happy you did.

I have been hard using the med. handle with lg. cutting head for years.  Every part is replaceable.

They looked like anvil from the first photo. A while back I posted about anvil loppers at Aldis and bsbullie said bypass were more generally useful. I have both kinds.

I have a pair of Vesco double cut pruners and I really prefer them for making clean cuts while harvesting budwood and decapitating plants (especially harder woods like jaboticaba) I like them for pruning smaller diameter wood, and I feel like I can cut much closer to the trunk without scraping the trunk of the tree. Also with small branches these don't allow the branch to fold between the blades. They do sell replacement parts and are well made.

I think it's all preference at the end of the day, and I am actually planning to buy a pair of felco 2 pruners for my every day maintenance pruning.

Those Vesco pruners are looking like the winners right now. Those and the Silky Gomboy 240 with medium teeth. Those should complete my arsenal for the next decade or so.

according to this reviewer some of the double cutters have an adjustment screw to set the closing point.
