Is Valcarrie just as bushy as Carrie?
« on: April 12, 2016, 02:01:32 AM »
I'm planning to grow one of the two and I'm leaning towards Valcarrie. It doesn't change my decision, but it would be nice to note.

No. The growth habit isn't super vigorous but it's definitely more vertical, and the leaves tend to have longer internodes.

What I used to hear was that ValCarrie was a slower grower, bushier and smaller than Carrie. I have Carrie but not ValCarrie. You could email Pine Island and ask them.
Can you even get a V-Carrie? I rarely see them for sale

All wrong.  Valcarrie is readily available.   Why would you ask PI?  If you want to know, go to the source.  It is a Zill mango.  I believe I have the story behind it I can post.

If you have a story about the Valcarrie I would like to hear it. It's one of my very favorite mangos.

Yah, you piqued my interest as well :-). My wife will do backflips for the valcarrie.

And, yah, Alex has it right on growth habit.

Have you been able to grow this one out west? It tends to get hit with thracnose where I'm at. Crops are often somewhat sparse.

No. The growth habit isn't super vigorous but it's definitely more vertical, and the leaves tend to have longer internodes.

I have Valcarrie topworked on to my Glenn. It is an incredible mango. Both the topworked branches just took off vertically. Sad to hear that it gets hit with  anthracnose in this part of the county.

Thankfully, anthracnose is nearly nonexistent since of the dryness of the area.
