I'll be there next week. Hoping there are suggestions.

I second Ethan’s recommendation.

I think Montoso Gardens may be selling plants again. Not sure though.

If possible you should try and contact before going. So much of the island was devastated plus nurseries could be sold out.
There is a member her who may be able to help.

Thank you all for the suggestions. In reality I only have one full day in PR, so I may just have to settle for fruits instead.

If your in San Juan for 1 day, the Mangosteen's and Jakfruit at the botanical garden in San Juan could be fruiting.
If you can make it to Mayaguez for a TARS visit, that is a rare fruit wonderland.

You can bring soiless plants through USDA inspection station at the airport.  :)

In Old San Juan there is a little fruit/produce market somewhere....forgot the name. I found guanabana there (none available out west).
Maybe Yelp or just Google it.

While the island is small, getting from SJ out west to the places mentioned above (and back) would take a large portion of your day. Not impossible though, I guess.

I am very interested in this process. I only have experience with the small seed lot permit and everything has to be sent in the mail. You can't hand carry anything. Do you need to quarantine the plants in a locked greenhouse or are they ok since they are from PR/USA?

I'm pretty sure they inspect on the way out of PR and then your good to go. There's No Ag declaration on the domestic flight into FL that I've heard of.

So long as the plants you are bringing back are not prohibited,  the USDA inspects them at the airport, give you a sticker and you are good to go. You can bring back certain fruits too including jack! Unfortunately,  I don't think durian is on the list. :(
