Title: Garcinia hombroniana question
Post by: luc on January 15, 2019, 04:27:21 PM
Is there a slight possibility that a female tree may have some hermaphrodite flowers ? My gorgeous 5 plus meter tree has been flowering for several years , never a fruit , I 'd hate to cut it down .

If you're thinking about cutting it down anyway, you could always try blasting it with ever-increasing (up to ridiculous levels) of plant hormones that can affect sex expression, such as GA3.  I mean, what's the worst that could happen - you might kill it?  ;)

Can’t you just graft the opposite sex onto the tree???

I have a large female Garcinia benthamii which is also 5+ meters tall that will occasionally  set the odd miniature seedless fruit that ripens to a light orange colour. The tiny amount of flesh in these fruit has a very pleasant taste, so it would be nice to get some full sized fruit. I too find it hard to cut out such a lovely big tree, next season I will try to use pollen from my G.xanthochymus in an attempt to get fruit set.

Luc, above is true. I've seen lone 'female' G. hombroniana set small fruit without viable seed inside.

My cousin has a lone G.hombroniana which has been setting fruits with viable seeds. But I do not know whether it is female, male or hermaphrodite.
