Soursop Drink

I've only eaten soursop fresh.  Yesterday my niece told me she's only drank the juice in Indonesia, but never the fresh fruit.  I looked up how to juice soursop and make a tasty drink.  This is what learned:

Recipe
2 cups blended soursop pulp (seedless)
5 (3+2)  cups water
1 can condensed milk (can replace with some sugar, but, tsk, tsk)
2 Tbs lime juice
1 tsp grated nutmeg
1  Tbp vanilla extract
sugar (optional)
Serve over ice

John I've made a similar one but replaced the condensed milk with  vanilla ice cream. Spectacular.

Makes a great juice, but it's a real pain to remove all the seeds. And if you miss one and accidentally chop it up in your blender it's toxic. So better be careful.
BTW, in Mexico the juice is frozen and made into popcicles. Also very nice.
Personally i just freeze them and add them to whatever fruit smoothie i happen to be making. Very nice blended together with bananas. Add some berries for nice color and tang.

As I was wandering around one of the local whole sale club stores the other day, I noticed that they had packages of frozen guanabana pulp (also mango pulp) for making smoothies. Might have to go back and pick up a package to give this a try.

I'm curious to learn how soursop pulp is collected on a commercial basis.  My thinking is that they might use a machine similar to a cotton gin to shred it, then let the seeds sink, or use centrifugal force to separate it.  Does anyone know?

The juice, without the pulp, could probably be harvested in an apple cider press.

I'd be very careful with purchased frozen soursop. In the past many people have gotten sick from eating these products. I think these companies don't use great safeguards to make sure pulverized seeds are not included in final product. If you freeze soursop juice yourself you will see the difficulty of completely removing all the seeds. A soursop can have well over 100 seeds, and some of them are very well embedded in the pulp, some also immature seeds, and easy to miss.

I make my soursop smoothies with avocado and some vanilla protein powder. It's a great fruit, BUT it takes some work getting rid of the seeds. For deseeding I slice the fruit into disks about 1/2 inch thick. This exposes many seeds and simplifies the job of finding and removing any still hidden. Working with a ripe and juicy soursop requires a very sharp knife. It's a very messy operation, but the result is worth the trouble.

This year has been the year of soursop margaritas.

Start with processing soursop:
Seeds, skin and center removed, no need to strain, blend it until smooth and place in ice cube trays

Half a lemon squeezed
About 8-10 ice cubes of frozen processed soursop
A tablespoon of sugar (just to offset the sour)
1/4 cup of tequila
A cup of water
Put in blender

I have also tried soursop ice cream, it wasn't loved. I may try a sherbert

my Cuban grandmother would use the soursop to flavor milk, and it was delicious. she called it "champola" it was just the flesh of the fruit added to milk (sugar optional) and then chilled. mmmmm! I have also tried it with sugar apple and its great.

I'm excited that I can get frozen soursop pulp at the latin grocery even here in my little Tennessee town.
I love to blend it with yogurt - a great flavor combo.

I also add it to kombucha when bottling it.

And like Oscar mentioned, they sell soursop ("guanabana" of course) popsicles at the same market. On the same topic, a "paletas" shop in a nearby town has mamey popsicles, along with soursop. I have not had a chance to try the mamey (one of my favorite fruits).

Yes, laborious. Just be very careful to remove all seeds, as they are toxic when crushed in a blender.
(Nothing happens if you accidentally swallow one hard seed whole, as they go right through your digestive system in tact.)

I bought a good quality mouli/food mill , was able to process 3 litres of pulp in only 10 minutes . Luckily these fruits had very few seeds . Mate has hundreds of trees and some fruits get attacked by local forest critters .
My breeze block wall has a perfectly positioned hole to place the handle and this stabilises the tool for much easier processing.
