Title: Possum passion fruit pot versus in ground?
Post by: fisherking73 on May 09, 2019, 07:41:30 PM
Just picked up a passion fruit vine and debating on leaving in a pot or should it be planted in ground?

they grow better for me/vigorous in-ground

once established, they should be more hardy in-ground, and can better deal with dry spells than if sitting around in a pot.

In ground if you want a monster and have something big for it to climb on.
Grow it in a pot if you want it to be a little more manageable. Like roblack said, they are a lot more vigorous in ground.

I think you'll find it problematic in the long run to leave it in a pot.
Their natural inclination is to take off and climb.
You can keep them in a pot for a couple of years... but they really need to be free range.

To sort of echo most of the other comments -

I have not had much success/vigor with passiflora in pots. They live, and even flower and set fruit, but they're not vigorous or happy looking.

I am growing incarnata, however, and can't speak directly to edulis or other species.

Thanks, guess in the ground she goes lol The hope is to train her along the top of the fence line in 2 directions so 100 ft in each direction for it to grow.

This vine wants to grow to a 2-4" trunk diameter so if you want to see it's potential put in ground with sufficient space above. I have 3 large pine trees which have 3 vines each and get hundreds of fruit.
I also suggest planting several plants known to attract bumblebees as pollinators. This plant has worked well for me.

Follow up question. Where is a good reference for passion fruit cultivars? Have not found very much in my searches.

Has anyone come across good references for passion fruit cultivars? I’m especially interested in yellow varieties for their supposed longer harvest.

There’s a Passiflora society or something like that - not sure how much help they would be though.

Purple passion fruit have a longer season here.  Im getting fruit for more than half the year.   Ive got a yellow lilikoi and it requires more heat input to grow and flower.

Just an observation but some people have trouble with passionfruit pollination, and bumblebees seem to be the best for that.
If you want to attract them in Florida plant a few "Blue Porter Weed" (Stachytarpheta jamaicensis). Without fail they are always on this plant. Very easy to find and propagates by cuttings or seedlings.

I have a purple possum (or fredericks cant tell yet) that I bought at 6ft tall in a pot. Its still growing and putting out flowers and I hand pollinate. I mean really hand pollinate. If you just gently use a motion like picking a penny up off the floor to get pollen on your finger tips then run your fingers along the stigma, you can pollinate a flower in a manner of seconds. Been working really well for me.

I just pluck one of the anthers off entirely and use it as a paintbrush on another flower’s stigma
