Looking at fruit Brix
« on: November 30, 2012, 05:06:59 PM »
Brix is important!

think of it as an indicator of how healthy the plant was that produced your fruit!

the healthier your plants are, the healthier you will be from eating them.

From what I understand, you can buy fruits of the same variety of plant, but brix levels can be variable, based upon cultural practices!

Ive heard most of the produce we eat today generally has about half the nutritional value as it did back in the 1950's.

they've figured out a way to mass produce fruits for sale, but in the process have stripped some vital components of what I consider truly healthy produce.

I need a refractometer still.

maybe we can list some cultivars purported to have high brix!

like crystal honey (carambola, and loquat)
vista white loquat
smathers white sapote?
whitman green sapote? ( i remember an abstract about this one, sorry Paul, I know it's just some seedling from Bill's house)

any more commments or cultivars of high brix value?

You can thank the helpful curator over there, which provided these numbers to me. Now to make some prickly pear wine! I have many of the ones listed on that list, including 253 (Brix winner, love the low dev. #) Don't think you have that one yet  ;D. 244 was very sweet and totally seedless, I am hoping it does this again next year.

Hi Adam,

I was curious about abiu because I think it's a very sweet fruit. So I looked it up. In one research paper from Australia they listed abiu with a brix between 13-18%.
